Dial111: I moved to chch from Auckland and the people I work with seem to have a strong hate for Auckland with no valid or real reason why, All I get is "aaah it's full of yuppies who drive big fancy 4WD's and drink fancy coffee with their designer dogs and look down on the rest of the country" ok you described a populous of people from a few suburbs, the rest of Auckland is just like you.

Is it small town syndrome?

Not really but the ongoing coverage about auckland this, auckland that, gets rather tedious after a while for those who dont live there.

Yes housing is crap, but not we dont want change anything that changes things, oh have we mentioned how crap housing is.

Similar to roading. Yes our roads are crap not we dont want to pay to fix roads/petrol tax, oh have we mentioned how crap roads are

We all realise that auckland is the biggest city with the most population but a significant number of people _dont_ live in auckland and it would be interesting to hear from other parts of the country.

When you mention this you get this in a sensible way you get showered in accusations of tall poppy syndrome...

No, it is true of quite a few cantabs. Probably more so at a business level .

Tons of projects get financed out of Auckland and I guess some resent this.

It used to be much much worse. If you were from Auckland people could be very unpleasant. It largely stopped after the earthquake but it could well be coming back.

You do realise that's not the fault of EVERYONE living in Auckland, right? Media, politicians and those desiring their 15 minutes of fame or a spot in the history books only make up a very small chunk of Auckland's population.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Hotel electricians.
Light switches on the left of large beds that won't turn turn off the lights on the right and vice versa. No master switch next to the bed so you can't turn all the lights off at bed time.
Plugs set so close to surfaces that power bricks which are vertically below the socket cannot be plugged in.

The Labour stronghold electorates are all urban electorates. Which would be the main reason that labour are targeting most of their new taxes at farmers. As they know that farmers don't vote labour, so they don't care about annoying farmers.

Labour will be hoping that the mostly poorer voters in those electorates won't realise that extra taxes on farmers will mean higher food prices.

It was ever thus. I was at a dinner party once in the UK where the local Labour MPs office manager was present. I overheard him say "The Tories f'd the miners, so we're going to f the farmers!"

Pays to not confuse annoyance with the excessive political focus on Auckland with Aucklanders.

I'm an Aucklander - born there, lived there - moved away. Never really bothered by anti-Akl attitude when living in Chch. The subtle anti-kiwi thing in the years I lived in Aus was worse, by the time of the thousandth request to say fush and chups or sheep joke, made sense to adopt the aussie accent - so nobody knew. Problem with return to NZ - get crap for being an Aussie. When I was a kid, I got crap for being a pom - which I wasn't - just had parents who believed in good enunciation who spoke with BBC-English style accent.

As for the yuppie thing - spent years getting that crap too, having always lived in nice suburbs in a nice house with nice cars etc.

In the end I just give up on people with prejudices of all kind. In my career I had to don a nice suit and work with senior executives of large companies, then don overalls and work alongside production staff in factories etc. Effort to "get on" with folks becomes unneeded in the end, it just becomes natural. You gotta just get on with people - or life will be too hard. Being precious or over-sensitive - that's an annoying attribute in some people.

When you go shopping and get a reciept with a dirty great purple turd skid mark down it because its the end of the roll, and when you ask for a reprint on clean paper they give you a blank look.

Browns Hotel, an overpriced joint with poor service in Queenstown which tries to pass itself off as a 'boutique hotel', had only two wall sockets in our room - both set into the skirting board, 1 cm off the floor.

My childhood was in AKL, CHC ever since. I rarely felt any anti AKL sentiment, the jafa thing is hearted. But you always get some idiots who whine about everything, check Stuff comments.

Why would you care?

They lose the text on it really quickly, and it makes OCRing the scan impossible.

Same thing for bunnings and their silly policy of stamping reciepts with a giant red stamp. That actually blanks out the black thermal text almost immediatly - have to scan it within a few days or miss letters etc.
