Handsomedan:

Just started Gangs of London on Neon.

It's typical HBO-style in that it's obviously got a decent budget, it's well acted, scripted and shot.

It's not for the faint of heart, but it's pretty good if you like gritty, violent English drama that doesn't hold back.

Funny you should say that. I had started watching it a long time ago but for some reason had stopped after a couple of episodes. Wanted to pick it up again, so a couple of days ago I re-capped from the start. Currently up to E3. Really very good - but extremely violent as you say.

The reason I picked it up again is because I saw that second season was available.

We started watching this a while back, but my wife freaked out at the opening scene, and refused to watch it.  I think we are going to have another go because it sounds unmissable, but I'll have to bypass that opening scene.

We loved both seasons of Kin, which was equally violent, and managed the first season of Love/Hate which is even more violent.  Either program could have been called 'Gangs of Dublin' but I suspect letters would have been sent to solicitors if the Irish producers dared to be cheeky and satirize Gangs of London's title.

Now I am thinking that if you look up a book title on Good Reads, you'll often find multiple books from different authors used that title.

If the opening scene wasn't your bag, brace yourself. It's on the scale of Game of Thrones for graphic violence, but more "realistic"  - having lived in London for a few years and getting to know some "Geezers", it's made me realise how incredibly naive I was in my 20's and how close we were to this life without knowing it.

If watching someone take a hammer to someone's knee isn't your thing, I'd say maybe avoid it.

Terrifying.

Really enjoying Escape at Dannemora on Netflix. Now six years old but has some good people in it and an interesting storyline.

When I posted this I was at E2 - have now finished E6 out of seven. Based on a true story. Have binged the later episodes because I think it’s totally brilliant. Has a distinctly Fargo-esque feel to it.

As mentioned, six years old and possibly a sleeper but I don’t know how long it’s been on NF*. Would be interested to hear if others have watched it and what they thought.

*Started 24.10.24.

I watched the first episode of Dune Prophesy last night.  I've seen both of the recent Dune movies and impressed with them, and the TV series is way up there with story and production values.  At one point it flashes on the screen '10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides, so bear that in mind if you watch it. Something that interested me was Travis Fimmel appearing as the character Desmond Hart, because he gives off a hidden evil vibe.  Travis played a similar role in Raised by Wolves, but I am not sure if his Marcus character was so much evil, or stark raving mad.  It's a job to tell in this world when a First World nation like America decides that Donald Trump is a good choice to be their President.

9/10

We are doing quite well for decent SiFi TV shows lately.  I loved Foundation, and The Mandalorian had some good episodes (as well as some not so good ones).  I honestly think I am not being biased when I say that the best one was directed by Taika Waititi.

That character isn't in any of the Books, so has pretty much carte blanche in where they take it.

But its great to have a character that the audience do not know. and could go any way....  with huge amounts of fan speculation.

However its only got 6 episodes, ( now 5) and there is plenty of things to cover... if it doesn't get a second season I think there will be a some disappointment,

Also watching Day of the Jackal at the moment, which is a great vehicle for Eddie Redmayne, but the middle episodes are getting a bit slow and squishy with side quests for the sake of side quests occurring..

I've only read the original Dune, and my main memories are that a) it was a BIG book, and b) the first fifty or so pages were a very dry list of who's who, or something like that.  I only recently discovered that there are now nearly two dozen Dune books.  I see that Frank's sone Brian authored a lot of them.  Are they all worth reading?  Or listening in my case — it must be 15 years since I actually read a book.  I just checked and they are all available as audiobooks, and 20Gb all told.

As for plot liberties, I thought it clever the methods Foundation used to have continuity with the main characters while covering thousands of years.  The Empire has three Emperors Dawn, Day and Dusk who are clones, so there's always a new clone waiting to be woken up, obviously played by the same actor.  The Foundation cast just go to sleep and wake up next time they are needed.  There are some good plot twists, although it's a _very_ long time since I read the books so those storylines might not be new to the TV series.  I did start to reread Azimov not too long ago, but found his style dated and unenjoyable.  I think that was Caves of Steel, but I have most of them, so maybe I'll check out the Empire and Foundation books again.

Plum. ABC iView   7/10

"Football hero Peter "The Plum" Lum is diagnosed with a brain disorder; he tries to keep it from his family, but hiding the truth isn't easy as his ex-wife cares too much, and his son realises the father he worships is falling off his mantle."

Watched the first 4 episodes of 6 so far. A compelling story of the impact that brain injuries can have as the result of playing contact sports. Stare Brendan Cowell, Asher Keddie and Remain Clement.

Just finished Gangs of London season 2 on Neon.
Not as good as season 1, but still violent, bloody and brutal.
Not for the squeamish.

Also started season 2 of Silo on Apple TV+
Has essentially just continued where it left off and is starting to introduce some new characters as well as some new storylines. So far so good, albeit a little slow.

Finished off Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix. Was totally hooked and really enjoyed the characters, the storylines and the general drama of it all.
Hoping for a new season soon.

Having finished a few series lately we've been looking for something lightish to get hooked into - we found Shrinking on Apple TV+, which has started well for us.
The IMDB description is very accurate:
A grieving therapist starts to tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge changes to people's lives - including his own.
It's a dramedy, with a good general vibe to it. Harrison Ford is a great addition as a grumpy old bugger, who maybe isn't as grumpy as he wants people to think (that's not a spoiler - it's pretty obvious from the outset).

Nearly forgot - also started watching Dune: Prophecy on Neon. Slow but good and the budget must be eye-watering. It's at least the quality of the movies and has some quality talent attached.

I'm also watching The Day of the Jackal on TVNZ+. 7/10.

Watching this too, bingeing actually. At least an 8/10 from me.

Also the latest episodes of Yellowstone on Neon - can’t get enough of that either.

Plus free test cricket on TVNZ+ - great to see.

The Pengiun (HBO or Neon)
Gotham City underworld figure and his rise to power.

Colin Farrell and a bunch of others do a great job in this series about the Penguin and his rise to power as a gangster force.
For what it's worth rotton tomato gave every eposide 10/10,
Can be violent in places so be warned, but it's not violence for no reason.

Great character building and plot.

10/10

My only gripe with The Penguin was the fact that I wasn't able to binge watch it. I had to wait each week for an episode to drop and that really bugged me.
