Did/Would not even consider a local one.

What's your take on the NBR? I get a free subscription through work.

I have a Chch Press subscription however that's only because I need paper to light my fire in winter and I've got a cheap deal. I do pay for a New York Tiimes subscription which I do read.

Disclaimer: I have access to NBR Subscription Service as a courtesy. I think it could be worth but it's a business expense only really.

And what about Newsroom? I haven't made up my mind yet and it is not a daily read, but I do check the free part from time to time.

Stuff and NZ Herald getting a tweet and running with a "story" out of nothing or something insignificant is happening more and more.

It's happening everywhere. Formerly good newspapers such as the Daily Telegraph and The Times in the UK do it as well.

They are also filled with drivel that would never have made print newspapers.

Are you a subscriber to Daily Telegraph? They have a paywall.

Yes, I am.

Not only do they have a paywall, they even have a pop up that complains you are using an ad blocker even if you are a subscriber...!

I'm just trialling the Financial Times to see if I can find something that contains only news not stories about stuff and nonsense....

Headline: FCC drops proposal to ban cellphone use on flights.

Actual article: FCC drops proposal to allow cellphone use on flights.

Today, potentially the the worst storm in 50 years is expected to wreak havoc over large swaths of the country.

NZHerald's "Breaking News" banner?  "Sonny Bill Williams to replace BNZ logo with Plunket NZ…"

<sarcasm>

Well, glad that they've got the priorities sorted then...

</sarcasm>

From the Herald:

Harbour Bridge closure less unlikely

Closure of Auckland's Harbour Bridge now seems unlikely, but restrictions are possible.

Doesn't the headline mean MORE LIKELY. The opposite of the next line? !!!

Which is it?

Instead of having one article about the lawyer's comments on United Airlines fiasco, the NZ Herald syndicates something and decides that one "article" for each different comment is acceptable.

"Big pay rise for women!"

Not some specific women, but all women?

Said pay rise will cost "the government" $500 million. Not the taxpayers then. That's good. Special government money that comes from somewhere other than tax. A magic tree perhaps?

Heraldland must be a marvellous place!

"Passenger captures hairy landing at Wellington airport during cyclone Cook"

http://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/travel-troubles/91644489/passenger-captures-hairy-landing-at-wellington-airport-during-cyclone-cook

On Thursday it was perfectly calm in Wellington. The fact there was no wind at all was the reason there was so much fog around. The reason there was a 50/50 chance of landing was because of the fog, not the wind that was delaying flights and causing a number of go-arounds and diverts.

This video was speed up and showed a perfectly normal landing in dead calm conditions.

Further to United Airlines - the Herald attempts to make a story out of the various social media responses:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=11836448

Not a false headline but the writer clearly has no clue on pop culture. Star Wars and Walking Dead fans shake your head and sigh :-(

That's not actually a NZ Herald post though - it's just from news.com.au

Huge amounts of NZ Herald content is simply syndicated from the Daily Mail or news.com.au these days.

You're probably right, but in their terms they should have agreed with them to allow them to change the article a bit for it to make more sense to NZ readers, or to stop them looking like idiots....

This doesn't even qualify as clickbait anymore. It is pure fabrication. Since when did it become acceptable for media in New Zealand to create false news? I find this really disturbing.

it is not false news, it is in the magazine section. That is a big difference.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
