Handsomedan:

Saw the Rebel Wilson vehicle Senior Year on Saturday night on Netflix.

It was as awful as you'd imagine it to be. 3/10

IMO Rebel Wilson is just one of those actors who do far better in supporting roles as opposed to lead roles.

Well done for loosing all that weight though.

Downton Abbey 2019 - 9/10

What a hoot and lovable movie  and some nice surprises 9/10. Only the English can do these movie's. I’ll watch this again as I know I missed some scenery, props and witty dialogue.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (2014) DISNEY PLUS IMAX ENHANCED - 9.5/10

Brash space adventurer Peter Quill, finds himself the quarry of relentless bounty hunters after he steals an orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain. To evade Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with four disparate misfits: gun-toting Rocket Raccoon, treelike-humanoid Groot, enigmatic Gamora, and vengeance-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when he discovers the orb's true power and the cosmic threat it poses, Quill must rally his ragtag group to save the universe.

This was my third viewing of this Marvel Cinematic Universe film. I bought the Blu-ray in 2014, then I bought the 4K UHD disc when I got a 4K set up. Now I have gone totally digital, and I have a small Home Cinema room with an OLED TV paired with a Dolby Atmos sound system. Time to see the film again in Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos, and this time was the best of the three. I'm a huge fan of the Marvel franchise, and GotG is one of my favourites.

I recently signed up for SKY Broadband, which came with a 12 month Disney Plus subscription. Up until now, I have hardly used the streaming app, so I decided that it was time to check it out. I really appreciate the IMAX Enhanced option that Disney provides, and it certainly added to my enjoyment of this film. I'm sure that if they released the IMAX versions on disc, that they would sell a lot more copies, but obviously, the IMAX option is to lure subscribers to the channel. It's clear that Disney are leaning heavily toward streaming their movies, and physical media has become secondary.

I would have liked to have seen the whole film in the IMAX aspect ratio, but I had to be satisfied with certain scenes "opening up", usually in the many action scenes that this film provides. I believe that Shang-Chi, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame are the only titles to have been filmed entirely with IMAX cameras, so I will look forward to that experience.

Back to GotG. I remember that it arrived without much of a fanfare, but is now widely thought to be one of the best films in the Marvel Universe. Plenty of action, mixed with some tongue-in-cheek comedy, and a great soundtrack. What else can a movie fan want?

Top Gun Maverick  7.5/10 from me

Reasonably storyline, although a bit far-fetched for a grumpy middle-aged bloke like me.

OK acting.  Great cinematography and some excellent flying action.

About the right level of cheesiness and cliche to give me the nostalgia I was hoping for.  (If you don't like a bit of cringe, don't go and see it.)

Watched it at the cinema, not sure if it would have  been quite as compelling viewing it at home.

You pretty much covered it for me.

It needs to be seen at the cinema to really appreciate it. Big scenes with big sound.

Plenty of fan service as well. Think of any memorable scene in the first movie and there was at least a nod to it in the second, if not a full blown homage.

A predictable and far fetched story, yes. But worth seeing for the non-cgi real life flying sequences. Including Mr Cruise getting shot off a carrier in the back seat of an F model Super Hornet. And enduring some serious g in the same jets (along with other cast members).

Haven’t been in a cinema for two and a half years, but this was worth it. I walked out with a smile on my face.

So maybe sneak it up to an 8/10 for the pure entertainment value.

Just saw Top Gun Maverick, I'm giving it a 11/10

Only let down was the cinema I saw it in only supported Dolby 5.1, worth a trip to a cinema kitted with Dolby Atmos.

I saw it in Atmos at the embassy but I think it might be even better in IMAX but no IMAX Wellington.

Interesting fun fact. They wanted to use F35's but they are single seater so Tom could not fly in one. So they used F18's with the two seats, the actors sat in the  back seat as if they were the pilots so we could see the real G forces acting on their faces. But that forced to write a story line that needed F18's.

I think 10/10 is good. Great entertainment value and hardly a slow moment.

Darkest Hour - DVD 9/10

Watched this a few times now and it gets better with each viewing. Gary Oldman is just sensational as Churchill (you wouldn't recognize him) and fully deserved his Oscar.

Listening to parts of Churchill's famous speeches reminds you of how he weaponised the English language and how badly we need someone who could do that now with the likes of Russia and China riding roughshod over millions of people. I can't think of a single leader whose speeches would inspire me to even get out of bed.

Everything Everywhere All at Once. When I first read about it, sounded amazing. The IMDB rating was 8.9/10 (now 8.4/10) and the whole thing make it feel like the movie of the year.

What a disappointing 5/10 piece.

Yeah I didn't love it, couldn't see the qualities that are making people go ape about it.

Edit: Other than Michelle Yeoh, who is a global treasure as always.

I read the glowing reviews of the film. When I read some of the comments later, about it being a bit crazy (silly), I began to think that maybe it wasn't the masterpiece that everyone was calling it.

Probably another case of film critic reviews being out of touch with general audiences.
