I watched "Unbearable Weight of Massive Tale" the other day,

Its not a bad buddy film, but the chemistry and banter between Cage and Pascal ends up being the only thing carrying the film along, and ultimately its ends up in a bit of a crazy mess- which is bit of a let down

My recommendation would be to NOT watch the trailers, as these contain many of the best bits, and once you have seen them it takes away much of the tension from the film.....

Its a great watch if you are Nic Cage or Pedro Pascal fan, but it appears to have bombed at the box office,

Bullet Train at Event - 7/10

Sort of a cross between Smokin' Aces, Pulp Fiction, and a Guy Ritchie movie with the over the top violence of Deadpool (not surprising given it's the same guy behind it)

Bunch of assassins converge on a bullet train, each with their own backstory.

Entertaining and fun, if a bit long. Brad Pitt overdid his character a bit I thought though.

Not a great movie by any means but I can think of worse ways to pass a couple of hours.

I did learn a new term while reading some other comments about the movie - Chekhov's Gun.

Ditto. I had to look it up. It's a principle that can't be used in TV dramas because they want to leave a few loose ends for the next series, and that can be a problem. Apple's Treadstone is a case in point. Season left us hanging, and then they cancelled it. That was annoying!

I noticed that the original Gray Man book is back on the shelves. I hope lots of people start reading the series because the books are better than the movie IMO, and there are a lot of average books being published nowadays.

Hah! This is a double off topic comment going from movies to TV to books, but I'd like to think it is relevant.

RRR - 8/10 (Netflix)

This came to my attention via an unusual route - I got an alert from Youtube about the Honest Trailer for this film, and it looked interesting. I've been at home with Covid so have been distracting myself with lots of movies and TV shows.

I guess you would call this a Bollywood film, but I've never actually watched one all the way through so I don't know if there is some special "qualification" for a film to be Bollywood. A more accurate description would be "Indian period-piece action film." It's over the top, bonkers, and pretty damn fun.

First up, it's over 3 hours long. It seems to be unapologetically so, and while that is pretty damn epic, I didn't feel like it dragged. The story revolves around two characters - Akhtar/Bheem and Raju - and it's set in 1920s British-occupied India. The film opens with a series of disclaimers that are quite earnest to point out that it is fictitious, not based on any existing story, and is not intended to offend any culture or race. It's notable because it goes right at the start of the film, rather than buried at the end of the credits - it's clear the producers really want to make clear that it's just "fun." About 10 mins in, you understand why - I would describe this as kind of "violence fantasy porn", because the British are portrayed as sadistic villains, and the Indians are majestic heroes. I guess they included the disclaimer to avoid offending the western audience. But speaking as a member of that audience, I wasn't in the least offended. It was an interesting inversion of the typical trope in most western films which portrays English/white people as saviours and anyone with dark-coloured skin as scheming villains.

Back to the story. A girl is bought from a poor tribe by the British Governor, and that sparks a retaliation by the tribe's "shepherd" who sets out on a mission to recover the girl for his tribe. Meanwhile, Raju (Ram) is an Indian serving in the police, aiming to be promoted to a Special Officer. Both men are portrayed as "superhuman" in their skills and determination, in scenes that are gloriously over the top. I won't spoil more of the film, but we follow both of these two as their paths intersect over the course of several years.

Most of the film is subtitled, but some parts are in English. The characters are more caricature, but despite that we see character development and growth and you get attached to them as the story progresses. The stunt/action work is fantastic (the stunt coordinator's name is King Solomon, for crying out loud), and there were plenty of scenes that put a big grin on my face. It never takes itself too seriously, which is becoming a problem in most major tentpole films coming out of Hollywood.

Being a Bollywood film, I was expecting/hoping for an amazing dance sequence. There are only two here, and they aren't quite as lavish as the typical Bollywood dance scene, but they are still pretty entertaining.

Overall, I thought this was a great film, and I'm going to go looking for more to try and watch. If you're not put off by subtitles, enjoy good action, and aren't looking for something too pretentious, then give this a whirl.

Saw it referred to online a couple of times, and as it it was on netflix thought I'd give it a go.

Both my wife and I loved it - truly awesome movie! As a matter of fact it's gone into the 'must rewatch for the lunacy of it all' pile.

As Olivia Newton-John had died during the week and as I'd seen Grease so many time we decided to watch Xanadu . I quite liked even though the script left a lot to be desired but the music was great. She could really sing.

It applies in both temporal directions too,

If you have the gun on stage in Act 1, someone will be shot with it in Act 3,

But If you have someone Shot in Act 3, you must have a gun on stage in Act 1.

but, it doesn't have to be all explicitly in one Movie/episodes , If can be used across seasons, which is what you see in "arc" TV with payoffs for certain actions occurring episodes or even in the next season...

Sometimes the payoff can be really long.... like Ed Baldwin busting out his Korean in the Season 3 final of "All mankind" -

One of the episodes in Season 1 dealt with his wife having recurring nightmares about him crashing into the jungle during the Korean war and being eaten by a Panther

It's funny to see people bringing up Xanadu since ONJ's passing. There was an interesting defence of the film on Stuff last week. A lot of people coming out and saying how the script was daft but the music was great. I'm going to express the controversial opinion that the whole film (daftness included) is great. But then again, I was also one of the only people on the planet who actually enjoyed Cats, so go figure...

I think part of the reason why it didn't work for many people is that it followed Grease, and was compared to that (which had a very easy-to-follow story). Xanadu's story is more fantastical - kooky pseudo-Greek myth elements, imaginary scenes, the whole roller-disco thing - rather than conventional. I think people also got distracted by the Kira/Sonny love story side (which, to be fair, is front and centre), when I think the real protagonist is Gene Kelly's character Danny. It's about nostalgia, and the longing for a simpler time while the world is changing so fast. Danny is marinating in the memories of his younger days when Sonny turns up looking for a purpose in his life. They represent the past and the future, united in the present. The first part of the film is all about Danny's past - the dance scene that goes back to the 40s in particular - show that he is living in his past. Sonny comes along and gives him the opportunity to bring his past into the present, and brings it up to date with the modern trends of rock music, roller skating, disco style, etc. The movie is really about Danny passing his torch onto Sonny, which he ultimately does at the end.

I realise I've put way too much thought into the film that notoriously inspired the Razzies, but I've seen it more times than I can count. I completely un-ironically love this film. Come at me! :)

Jamie Foxx is really good in this film.
Its an action packed modern vampire killer film. More tongue in check than horror , over the top shoot em up .

I'd give it a 7/10. Starts off really good , gets too silly & too hollywood at the end .
Snoop Dogg was a surprise :-)

Woodstock 99 , netflix
A doco split over 3 episodes . I watched it all in one hit .

9/10 . Really good . Shows how bad that woodstock reboot was , and how attitudes have changed for the worse since the original in the
60's . Shows management not caring & just after money at any cost , out of control youth just wanting anarchy & destruction , some bands just wanting to work the crowd into a frenzy of destruction .
