Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio - Netflix - 8/10. (Mainly for the artwork)

Oh boy this version is a bit on the dark side. Would not recommend for kids under 13y. The cgi is great. The story line is not how we all remember the original and it is not a very smooth script.

This version of Pinocchio destroyed my childhood memories of Disney's magical original. Very dark indeed, and definitely not for younger children.

I agree that the stop-motion animation is superb, and makes for great visuals. There were a few attempts to add songs to the film, but, to me, they are all forgettable. "When you wish upon a star" they ain't.

I'm afraid that I can't score this higher than 6/10, and that is mainly for how good the film looked.

The original Pinocchio is a film that I could re-watch several times, but once is enough for this "Adult" version.

Watching the 4K version of Pulp Fiction recently acquired. Damn, thats good stuff, but you know that already.

Next up will be 4K Casablanca, 4K Reservoir Dogs, 4K To Kill a Mockingbird and bluray Arsenic and Old Lace.

I saw Avatar at Queensgate IMAX yesterday.

It's the most terribly written movie that absolutely everyone must see. Especially at IMAX. This is not like pre-pandemic 3d.

The HFR is glorious but changes back and forth between 24fps a lot, which is jarring until you get used to it. But hopefully this is a tipping point for hfr in that general audiences might wonder why it goes from looking smooth and crisp to juddery in the next shot. If they can see the actual differences between legacy and hfr in real-time that might actually help to convince people it's better.

Queensgate IMAX itself is great, super lucky to have that up the road now.

Swimmer on Netflix about 2 Syrian Sisters who escape Syria to pursue a better life for themselves and their family and try for the Olympics.

Decent story reasonably well acted. Worth a watch 7/10

Plan B. Comedy. 8/10. Teenagers try to find morning after pill after drunken party. By turns hilarious and cringeworthy like teenage life itself. Contains one explicit non-sex scene that takes a week to forget. Disney.

WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING (2022) 8.5/10

Abandoned by her family, Kya raises herself all alone in the marshes outside of her small town. When her former boyfriend is found dead, Kya is instantly branded by the local townspeople and law enforcement as the prime suspect for his murder.

Having looked on Rotten Tomatoes for some info on the film, I found that Critics only scored it 34/100, but Audience score is 96/100. How can the two be so far apart. I don't know what Critics look for in a film, but I find that the Audience score is usually much closer to my view than the Critics are, and WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING is no exception.

The story of Kya is a real roller coaster ride of emotions, and Daisy Edgar-Jones plays her part brilliantly. I found myself sharing her joyful moments and her many painful ones, just as it should be when watching a film like this. I would class it as a romantic courtroom drama with just enough courtroom as to not slow down the story being told out of court.

As I start to tire of the many senseless action/adventure/superhero films available, its good to know that they are still making alternatives that will hold my attention for more than 30 minutes.

Got Baz Luhrman's Elvis on DVD from the library.

It's in the dramatised biopic style and as you could expect, the music is a major part of the movie. It races through his life , focusing mostly on events after recording his first record at Sun.

A major character is his manager 'colonel' Tom Parker , played by Tom Hanks.

Thoroughly enjoyable - 9/10

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

Isle Of Dogs - DVD - 3/10

More Wes Anderson weirdness this time in animation form. Despite many of the voices being A-listers it didn't do it for me and it's his weakest effort so far IMO.

Into The Woods - DVD - 4/10

Disney adaptation of a Steven Sondheim musical. Might appeal to the younger members of the family but I was looking for the end from halfway thru.

Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters - DVD - 4/10

Another dud not succeeding as either a fantasy movie or a horror movie. Odd combination of Jeremy Renner and Jemma Arterton in the lead roles.

I haven't seen the first two, but I thought that Hansel & Gretel was a fun comedy/action film that didn't take itself seriously, with some tongue in cheek acting.

Goes to show that we all like different types of movies.

Agree with this statement. As soon as we saw the dead colonels avatar we let out a collective groan and starting writing the script.

Saw it in V-Max at Tauranga Crossing. We did not think the graphics or colours 'popped' like in the first movie. They came across a bit muted.

So overall a bit disappointed. 7/10

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I certainly didn't have an issue with the visuals. Perhaps because it was at IMAX in laser. It was the best-looking piece of media I've ever seen.

In this genre I think Van Helsing is a much better example. Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale are a very effective combo IMO.
