Geektastic: Mission impossible.
6/10. Not as good as previous instalments. Benji and Luther were reduced to bit parts and the whole thing lacked the sheer craziness of previous outings.
I heard that Covid interfered with the shooting a lot and frankly it showed.
Sorry to hear that you weren't too impressed with this film. It was one title that I was gonna buy Day 1 0n 4K Ultra HD. I may have to rent it first.

We watched Mrs Harris Goes To Paris on Sky TV over the weekend.
Delightful movie about a war-widowed cleaning lady in 1957 London, who has a sudden and wild desire to get a Dior dress from the design house in Paris.
It focuses on her struggles to earn enough, then go to Paris and "buy a dress". It's not as easy as that - she finds that out.
Well acted, quite engaging and completely devoid of foul language, nudity, violence and all the other tropes that make modern films what they are.
9/10 for me.

Based on the novels written by Paul Gallico. A very entertaining series of books from 50 odd years ago I read as a kid.
Lesley Manville really captures the spirit of Mrs Harris. Great entertainment.
JUNGLE CRUISE (2021) 4K Ultra HD Disc 6.5/10
I love treasure and artefact hunt films, especially ones set in the 1920's or 30's. So, with a brand new 4K Disc just arrived today; I settled into my armchair and gave it a spin.
I have had the pleasure of riding on Disney's Jungle Cruise ride at Hong Kong and Anaheim Disneyland, and I was hoping that the film would be as good as the Pirates of the Caribbean series (well, the first film), which is also based on a Disneyland ride, of which I have also had the pleasure to ride on. The pairing of Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt as the main characters in search of the Tree of Life, seemed like it may be a bad choice, but surprisingly to me, they made it work.
The search begins on the Amazon river (shot in Hawaii and Georgia apparently) where Johnson and Blunt are joined by Jack Whitehall (who plays Blunt's somewhat wimpy brother) on Johnson's River Boat named Quila, that looks like it could become driftwood at any moment. They negotiate many pitfalls along the way, and we have to put up with Johnson's continuous corny one-liners which would probably go down well in the Silly Jokes thread here at Geekzone. Its a good action packed adventure, while not being a classic, and the action gets quite frantic in the latter parts of the film, but I never lost track of what was happening.
A solid family fun film that I was entertained by.

I felt Jack Whitehall was quite the scene stealer, I really enjoyed him in this.
Black Adam (Sky Movies in a Wellington Hotel) - 4/10
I wasn't inspired to watch this in the cinema when it came out, but with few options in a hotel room a couple of weeks ago, I settled for Black Adam. I can confirm it is as bad as many people reported. I know there are stories about why, but for me it just boils down to a complete lack of interest or charisma from Dwayne Johnson. He is so associated with "fun" performances, this one stands out as being incredibly dull and un-fun. What's more bizarre is that he apparently fought tooth and nail for this character. I'm not a comic book guy, so I don't know anything about the character, but if this is an accurate representation, then it just seems plain boring. The rest of the cast are nameless, faceless placeholders - I can't remember a single one of them. Boring, boring, boring.
And, to confuse matters further, the magic word "Shazam" is involved here, but it's never explained (for the non-comic book people) how and whether this relates to Shazam (the movie and character). Say what you like about Marvel, and how their films often come out of a sausage factory, but they usually explain the connections - though this is becoming a more exhausting exercise these days.
DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: Honor Among Thieves (2023) 4K Ultra HD Disc 7.5/10
This was my second viewing of this film. My first was at a friends house, and I remember thinking that it wasn't too bad, even though my mind wasn't really taking it all in as we were talking a lot between scenes. I have had the 4K Ultra HD Disc for a couple of weeks now, so I thought it was time to watch it again.
This is definitely a film to split opinions of movie fans. If you are not into fantasy, magic, Dragons etc. its not for you. Personally, I had a total blast. Chris Pine is excellent as Edgin Darvis who, along with his friend Helga, wizard Simon and shapeshifter Doric, go on a quest to find the "Tablet of Resurrection" which can bring dead people back to life (told you it was a fantasy film). The rest of the movie can only be explained as "mayhem" as we follow this group on their many exploits. Talking to long dead warriors, fighting a Dragon and attempting to nullify a deadly sorceress are all part of the journey. Lots of fun, and a great addition to my Home Cinema movie collection.

ALITA: Battle Angel (2019) 4K Ultra HD Disc 10/10
This 4K disc arrived from JB Hi-Fi Australia today. As an avid Sci-Fi fan and Home Cinema nerd, I couldn't wait to put the disc into my player. I have seen the film before, but not on 4K disc, or an OLED TV. The whole experience was amazing.
At one point in the film Alita says "I'm just an insignificant girl". Trust me, that statement is so far from the truth; She is an incredible 300 year old fighting machine. From the moment that her "father" finds her on a rubbish heap, and puts her back together using the body that was originally meant for his paraplegic daughter (who never got to use it), we are taken on a roller coaster action ride, which arguably has never been bettered. So many wonderful characters abound "many of them are out and out killing machines", I just never got a chance to have my attention wander off somewhere else. The film has James Cameron's mark all over it, although he didn't direct, he wrote some of the screenplay and was one of the producers.
Deep, rich, low frequencies really gave my subwoofer a workout (thank goodness I don't have close neighbours} and the contrast in the many dark scenes was superb on my OLED TV. The film under performed at the worldwide Box Office. It did take over $US400 Million, but because of the high production cost, and the fact that there was so much competition that year (nine films broke the $US1 Billion mark, Avengers Endgame $US2 Billion) it was considered to be a fail. Consequently, we will not be getting the planned sequel.
An innovative Sci-Fi master class, with a stellar cast, which will no doubt enter the cult movie collections of many film lovers. I will keep my fingers crossed for an eventual sequel. Until then, I always have this disc to fall back on.

PUSS IN BOOTS: The Last Wish (2022) iTunes Rental 7/10
Puss In Boots has a problem. After his latest death, he counts back the times that he has died before. He finds that he has used eight of his nine lives. His Doctor recommends retirement, but Puss, along with his ex-fiancé Kitty Softpaws and a Chihuahua named Perrito, decides to go in search of The Wishing Star, so that Puss can use the last wish to restore his lost eight lives. Together they steal the map of its whereabouts, which takes them to the Dark Forest, and this is where the adventure begins...
This is a very colourful animated film that I quite enjoyed. As you would expect, Puss and his friends are not the only interested parties, and their paths cross many times before the quest reaches its finale. There is Big Jack Horner, Goldilocks and the three bears and the ever present menace of the Wolf who wants Puss's soul.
I had a few laughs along the way. A fun film for all the family, although the Wolf may be a bit scary for the youngest viewers.

AMERICAN MADE (2017) iTunes Library 8/10
Based on the life of Barry Seal who, after initially being a small time smuggler of Cuban cigars; is approached by the CIA to fly missions for them. He becomes very rich when his activities escalate to cocaine delivery and gun running, eventually becoming an informer for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Tom Cruise is excellent as the likeable Barry Seal, and he is always at the forefront of the film. I don't know how much of the story is actually true, but if Seal did half of the things he does on screen, then he would have been a very busy boy. Its an enthralling story, with a small insight into the operations of the Medellin Cartel; founded by the notorious Pablo Escobar, and the underhand operations run by certain government departments.
The film is well paced, and there are some good supporting performances, but Cruise is the main factor.

Heart of Stone - Netflix NZ
It's a great premise - a supercomputer (The Heart) under the control of a benevolent CIA-like organisation is under threat and their agent (Stone - played by Gal Gadot) must sort it all out.
It's a bit James Bond, a bit Mission Impossible and a bit rubbish.
Wooden acting, terrible dialogue and hammy action sequences make this a lot worse than it should be.
Jamie Dornan is the co-star and Glenn Close makes a cameo too.
All in all, it's a poorly executed movie that could have been quite good in the right hands. 4/10
This review from Mashable sums it up perfectly.
On one hand, Heart of Stone has the misfortune of sharing major plot similarities with the rollicking Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, which hit cinemas less than two months ago. On the other hand, it also feels like an intentional attempt to ape the magic of earlier Mission: Impossible films, only it lacks the necessary sleight of hand. Worst of all, its sprawling ensemble — led by Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot, Fifty Shades front man Jamie Dornan, and Bollywood superstar Alia Bhatt — ends up a charisma black hole. This is partially owed to the sheer lack of material they're offered by the script, but the problems at the heart of this flimsy action knock-off are multifaceted and run bone deep.

Dune (2021) - Finally got to sit down and watch this. Glad I watched it on our big screen with sub :) Very impressive movie, and sticks close enough to the original story for those who have read the book. Looking forward to the second part. 8/10
Gran Turismo (2023) - Being a gamer, and car fan, been looking forward to this one. Found it quite enjoyable. If you're not a car fan, probably avoid. 7/10
