I thought the Snyder Cut was head and shoulders better than the theatrical version. No great, but far more watchable than I expected (I streamed it, so no ads). However...

  • The 4:3 format made no sense when it was a streaming release to be viewed on 16:9 TV screens, and not in IMAX theatres.
  • It was incredibly self indulgent to include a bunch of setups and foreshadowing for future storylines that he knew would never be told. I understand they were part of his original vision, but by the time the Snyder Cut was put together it was clear to all parties that the "Snyderverse" would not be coming back - so at least some of these should have been excised (specifically The Martian Manhunter and the dream/nightmare future sequence).

Gran Turismo - 7/10

Based on the unbelievable, inspiring true story of a team of underdogs - a struggling, working-class gamer, a failed former race car driver, and an idealistic motorsport exec - who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.

We enjoyed this movie, even though it was a bit predictable.

SPIDER-MAN: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) • iTunes Library • 5/10

After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn's full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. However, when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders. He must soon redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

A few weeks ago I watched "Into the Spider-Verse" and, although I don't confess to understanding everything that was going on, I did grasp enough to give it a 9/10. So, when I saw that iTunes had the sequel on sale for $14.99, I bought it and watched it today.

I realize now that these films are not aimed at older viewers like myself. I was totally confused at what was happening in this film and it was a battle for me to stay awake. The animation is gorgeous and the Atmos audio is very effective, but they were the be all and end all of my enjoyment of this movie. I made it to the end and kept my eyes open long enough to read that "Miles Morales will return in Beyond the Spider-Verse).

Maybe I need to watch the first two back to back so everything is fresh in my old mind and I can begin to understand the complexities of the multiverse. My score of 5/10 is for the enjoyment I got from the Home Cinema experience. I know that its not a bad movie and many people love it, but maybe there should be an explanatory help sheet that I can access whilst watching the film.

Cocaine Bear - 4/10 (Neon)

My partner suggested we watch this after talking to some of her workmates, because it is "funny, over the top, absurd, and Tarantino-esque."  It's been a tough couple of weeks, and she felt we needed some mindless fun to unwind. I'm always up for something funny and absurd, and sometimes mindless fun is good.  But despite the bar being set quite low, it really failed to clear it.

While there were occasional moments that made me smile, it lacked anything that really tickled my funny bone.  While basic concept (bear gets all drugged up on cocaine and goes on a rampage) is absurd enough, it felt like a single joke that never gets developed.  There is a wide cast of characters that never develop beyond their basic shape.  The whole movie feels like an underbaked cake - the ingredients are there for something really funny and maybe even a cult classic, but it never really gets off the ground.  If it was being released in a few months time I would have blamed it on the writer's strike as an example of poor writing, but I think this is just bad writing. Such a shame.  The only plus side is that it's not long, at just on the feature-length mark, and we started watching early.  So I was able to put on a better example of a funny, over-the-top, absurd movie - Crank (8/10 - DVD). This is one of Jason Statham's earlier films.  He's a professional hitman who gets injected with a poison that is stopping his heart, and the only way he can keep going is to constantly boost his adrenaline.  So he has to seek out more and more extreme acts to power his heart as he seeks revenge on the man who killed him.  It's utterly ridiculous, but also utterly fun.  Statham works as the furious maniac who will do whatever he needs to do to get his revenge, and all of the other characters are equally cartoonish.  There is a GTA vibe purposefully injected (and we're talking the original, top-down GTA from the 90s), which amplifies the gaming feel.  And even more incredulously, they did a sequel.

After watching both, I asked my partner which was better.  No question. Crank won the night.

@Movieman, not sure if the below helps:

SPOILERS

In the first one Mile Morales was bitten by a spider from a different dimension. So the premise of the sequel is that he was never meant to become Spider-Man (as his dimension had already had one), and that him becoming Spider-Man (which also meant another dimension never got a Spider-Man) has resulted in the entire multiverse being somewhat messed up for "reasons". And all the other Spider-Mans (Spider-Men?) across the multiverse have banded together to keep things from falling completely apart.

END SPOILERS

FLORA AND SON (2023) • Apple TV+ Original • 9/10

Single mom Flora (Eve Hewson) is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up LA musician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music. From the musical mind of John Carney, "Flora and Son" explores the bond between a mother and son on a journey toward a new harmony.

A couple of years ago I was browsing the under $5 section of the iTunes store. A film there looked interesting, so I bought it; It was Sing Street which was written and directed by Irishman John Carney, it was excellent.

My wife recently bought an iPhone which gave her a free subscription to Apple TV+ where I came upon a new Apple TV+ Original entitled Flora and Son, also written and directed by the same John Carney. It starred Eve Hewson as Flora, a single mum trying to do the right thing by her errant teenage son Max. I've seen Eve in several acting roles, but always thought of her as eye candy with a bit of talent. How wrong I was. She really knocks it out of the park in this role, and I was drawn into life in working class Dublin.

I play an acoustic guitar myself, so I enjoyed watching Flora having her You Tube lessons, as I also use You Tube for new songs/tunes. The film is music based, but not a musical as in The Lion King or Jersey Boys stage musicals, just a sprinkling to embellish the storyline. Apple surprised everyone with their Best Picture Oscar win in 2022 with CODA. If nominated, Eve Hewson could cause another upset as Best Actress at the 2024 awards. That's not to say that I would rule out a nomination for Best Picture as well. It wipes the floor with the crappy so called Blockbusters that I have seen lately.

@jamesrt:

Sound of Freedom - Cinema - 9/10

The incredible true story of a former government agent turned vigilante who embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue hundreds of children from sex traffickers.

Hard film to watch, from the perspective of the subject material; but a film that should be watched by large numbers of people, in order to draw awareness to the subject material...

I wonder if they are going to make "Part II: where the hero is outed as sexual assaulting his female partners in the missions".

Some stories emerged about a woman who was sexually assaulted by Ballard (the "hero").

Now, more stories come to light.

Also shown to be categorically inaccurate in its depiction of how these investigations actually play out.

Which in and of itself is ok. It’s a film, not a documentary.

Where it runs in to trouble is when people claim it’s a documentary.

Ford v Ferrari - DVD - 7/10

Christian Bale and Matt Damon star in the story of how Ford developed the GT40 with the aim of beating Ferrari at Le Mans after Enzo Ferrari rebuffed Henry Ford II's takeover offer.

The story of the two main characters, Ken Miles and Carroll Shelby, is the strong part of the film. The racing sequences are pretty average with plenty of those standard shots of drivers feet/pedals while changing gear and attempting to overtake. Also they were supposedly doing 200mph+ on the Mulsanne Straight and it looked more like 60.

This looks fun for all the family this Christmas

Wonka - The story will focus specifically on a young Willy Wonka and how he met the Oompa-Loompas on one of his earliest adventures.

Reptile - Netflix - 7.5/10

Benecio del Toro stars in this very watchable murder mystery as a detective investigating the violent murder of Justin Timberlake's wife.

Enough red herrings to make it interesting but not too complicated and Del Toro is at his menacing best.

He reminds me somewhat of Alec Guiness in the original Tinker, Tailor BBC series. It's as if they are wondering what the unfortunate target of their gaze would look like on a mortuary slab.

Venom (2018) 4K Ultra HD Disc • 6/10 • Re-watch.

Investigative journalist Eddie Brock attempts a comeback following a scandal, but accidentally becomes the host of Venom, a violent, super powerful alien symbiote. Soon, he must rely on his newfound powers to protect the world from a shadowy organization looking for a symbiote of their own.

I had a few laughs, and there was some good action scenes, but overall, just another superhero flick. Its not though; Eddie Brock isn't a superhero, he's just an out-of-work journalist trying to get his girlfriend (Michelle Williams) back after messing up with her. Although he does become a powerful human, he didn't ask to be possessed by a Simbiote, it just happened that way. Eddie and the Simbiote find a way to exist together and possibly even like each other. Many fun situations arise and make the film quite enjoyable.
