Dunkirk - Blu-Ray UHD - 9/10

Terrific transfer to UHD/HDR and with the DTS-HD soundtrack the dog fight scenes over the Channel are just incredible.

gehenna:

I think that movie is helped a lot by Keaton being in it.

Must be an old movie if Buster Keaton is in it.

I watched Class Action Park last night  - Sky On-Demand download (don't need to subscribe to movies).  A documentary about a New Jersey waterslide and attraction park (in the 1980's) and its unscrupulous owner who had some crazy ideas for the rides and who felt safety laws (as well as tax ones for that mattered) were nothing but a burden and for a large part ignored them. Many injuries and several deaths ensued.

Reasonably interesting watch.  If you enjoyed Trainwreck (Netflix docco about Woodstock 99) and you've got a couple of hours spare during these holidays then you might like this as well.

TRUE LIES (1994) My iTunes Library: 8/10

A fearless, globe-trotting, terrorist-battling secret agent has his life turned upside down when he discovers his wife might be having an affair with a used car salesman while terrorists smuggle nuclear war heads into the United States.

...

If you have never seen this James Cameron action movie, give it a shot, I think you'll like it.

I love this moviel In fact I bought it on laserdisc (!) with a Dolby Digital soundtrack (well it was Dolby Digital AC-3) which send the digital signal out from the laserdiscs as a RF encoded signal on the left analogue channel which a suitable equipped receiver could decide into 5.1 audio, the best audio you could get at the time.

I see that it's coming out in UHD in March next year with an Atmos sound track so I might look at that.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes  8.0 from 10.

I really enjoyed this movie, far more than the second or third.

Nothing beats the first book though :)

YOUNG GUNS (1988) 7/10

A group of young gunmen, led by Billy the Kid, become deputies to avenge the murder of the rancher who became their benefactor. But when Billy takes their authority too far, they become the hunted.

A good old fashioned Western, with early career performances from Charlie Sheen, Lou Diamond Phillips, Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland and a small part for an old favourite of mine... Jack Palance (remember Shane?).

DUEL (1971) 7/10

Traveling businessman David Mann angers the driver of a rusty tanker while crossing the Californian desert. A simple trip turns deadly, as Mann struggles to stay on the road while the tanker plays cat and mouse with his life.

Steven Spielberg's first motion picture is a cat and mouse action film between an angered "Peterbilt 281" truck driver and a "Plymouth Valiant" driven by a traveling salesman. The film was originally made for TV, but later got an extended theatrical release, which is the film that I saw.

While we never actually see the truckie, it seems that this is not the first time that he has played this game. Denis Weaver whom I remember from TV shows like "Gunsmoke" and "McCloud" (I'm ancient 😁) stars as the salesman who can't shake off his predator, which leads to an exciting thrill ride and an immensely satisfying climax.

Aquaman and the lost kingdom - 5/10

Amazing effects etc like the first one and.... thats about it. Story was fairly standard fare, and jumped around the place.

Don't bother hanging around for any "teaser" at the end - its just an in-movie joke.

And there goes the last of the Snyderverse.  It outstayed its welcome.

THE SHALLOWS (2016) • 6.5/10 • iTunes 4K

When Nancy is surfing on a secluded beach, she finds herself on the feeding ground of a great white shark. Though she is stranded only 200 yards from shore, survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of Nancy’s ingenuity, resourcefulness, and fortitude.

If you have a 4K capable TV, then this film is one to show off its capabilities. Stunning aerial scenes abound throughout this short entertaining film. Set in Mexico, but filmed in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia: our heroine... Nancy (Blake Lively) starts her day leisurely surfing the great waves of an unspecified inlet. Her day turns upside down when she encounters a hungry Great White and her battle for survival begins.

A good film that is perfect for 4K screens. A true demo worthy spectacle that had me gobsmacked at its beauty.

Mothman : Beyond the Legend  3/10

Not a movie but a doco, about the Mothman legend that Mothman Prophecies was based on (and a movie I enjoyed).

Avoid. Is just a complete re-hash of every other Mothman doco/story out there with a really boring narrator. Could have been produced by any 14 year old in a basement.

Nothing new to learn/see.

Speaking of Synder, I watched Rebel Moon -Pt 1 ( Netflix) over the weekend, ... in short... don't bother,

Other than stunning visuals and well choreographed violence, its a shocker.....

Standard Space opera tropes of Evil warlord threatens salt of the earth farmers, one of the "farmers" then goes off into t universe to find warriors to defend them....

Paper thin character development and miles of stodgy dialogue
