A modern equivalent may be to medicate them.

Certain ethical questions would arise, but it's not as if it's not done (without consent) anyway - when it's determined that it's suitable for the benefit of a (non-criminal) patient.

If the subject is deemed non compos mentis, it is considered ethical to provide treatment in the best interests of the subject even without informed consent, which cannot be given. This is equivalent to treating a young child.

If the subject is a violent or anti-social criminal who has been convicted of a sufficiently serious crime, a choice could be offered between accepting medication, whatever that might be, or spending a lifetime locked up in a small box. The decision would be up to the subject. The question remains what kind of medication would be sufficiently effective and reliable, never mind the problems of ensuring it remains correctly administered.

.... we got all the way back to sci-fi again. That knowledge simply does not exist with any scientific certainty.

Several times in the past various.people and institutions were certain about it and the results were somewhat dystopian to say the least.

Don't go expecting any different the second time around.

Should we take the GOT or Trump concept and build a wall, put the good people on one side and the bad people on the other and then get Gandolf to stand in the doorway shouting "thou shall not pass"......

IMO I would rather spent a few dollars on a bullet for this guy than paying to keep him in prison.

They have to be more than simply non compos mentis - it has to be determined that the person may be of serious danger to their own, or others’ health and safety. Proving that (when they've not done anything except behave in a very strange manner etc) is fraught with difficulty.

There would be all kinds of ethical issues in testing a treatment for "anti-violence" if one was proposed. "Chemical castration" has been used in NZ for sex offenders - it doesn't always work:

I did say 'in the best interests of'. And not only does chemical castration not always work, it is largely based on a myth. Mainly, it just makes men impotent. It doesn't make them want to stop hurting people. It doesn't even make them want to stop raping. What it does do is give those men who are already motivated to change their behaviour more control over their sexual impulses. The myth is just something made up by the simple-minded who keep hoping for quick fixes to complex issues.

If you read his comment you'll see he is talking about THIS guy

How do you propose compensating this guys future victims if he re-offends?
