Yeah, each model tower is different, plus they come in a bunch of different height variants which have different foot spacing. Having exactly the right kitset is unlikely, and you can't bolt on a different version because the feet won't line up.

It'd be great if they could use this as an opportunity to put something like the Land of Giants towers in place.

Since we're talking about this sort of thing, I should also put in a word for the Telegraph Pole Appreciation Society.  Membership is worth it just for the copy of "Telegraph Pole Appreciation for Beginners" that you get on joining.

I dont think there could be that many different models of pylon in NZ.

If I was ordering 200 pylons for a new transmission line, I would be adding a few extra kitsets to the order as spares so we can keep them at a few yards for emergency use and replace as needed.

I definitley dont like those land of giant pylons. I have always felt our existing ones look quite nice as they are.

The problem is that the line was probably built about 50 years ago. Since then NZED has gone through many re-organisations and somebody has probably wondered why they were keeping all these bits of old steel and sold them to a scrap dealer.

Official: all the nuts were removed from three of the four base flanges during maintenance. There were specified procedures that should have prevented this, but they were not followed.

Oops! Bad day at the work for somebody.

Hope we don't get dickheads going around with undoing nuts on pylons now. Now that it is proven what can happen.

Given there was a contractor doing the work, Lawyers are about to make a huge pile of $$$...

Transpower >> Sues contractor for failure to follow procedures,

Contractor >> In return counter sues Transpower claiming procedures were not clear/incorrect/no existant,

Result : eventually they settle out of public court, Lawyers make a pretty large chunk of $$$,

Insurance company would be paying but they will likely dodge on basis of negligence.

Begs the question, did the pylon fall before they got to the nuts on the fourth leg? Was the intention to completely unbolt all 4 legs?

that will be a major concern now. we had attacks on cell towers before, including toppling them over.
