TheMantis:

Media constantly referring to the former town of Mount Maunganui as if it is still a separate and independent geographic location. When are they finally going to get the message that Mount Maunganui is a suburb of Tauranga and has been since 1989.

Up there with the ludicrous "Hutt City".

If New York is a city, the Hutt is barely a hamlet.

I never knew that. Why does a suburb's name appear on a map, and why is the font the same as other towns, and occasionally bigger? If it was removed from maps, and rarely mentioned, use Tauranga instead, the media and people may recognise its status better

For what it's worth, the NZ Post database still treats it as separate.

Yes but that same database insists I live in Ponatahi which is 25 km from my house, not Martinborough which is less than 5km from my house...!

Most suburbs are labeled on 1:50,000 topographic maps. The larger the suburb/town, the larger the font. If large enough then the name is all in capitals. This is not explained in the marginal information/legend on topographical maps so I'm only guessing.

We're also talking about the same media who announced on the 6PM News a couple of nights ago that the NZ emergency phone number is 911.

That's nothing... At least Lower Hutt has the required 100,000 pop to be called a city...

I live in the council region known as "Rural City of Murray Bridge".

pop: 22,000, in an area of 1832km2.

LMFAO

An area comparison

This is 1823km2

And 1830...

Just clicked on the link to Murray Bridge map and surrounds. I'm pretty impressed with the level of creativity required to name a town over the border "Big Desert" and the nearby "Big Desert Wilderness Area". Almost as good as "National Park".

I have a feeling I might be about to go down a Wikipedia rabbit hole.

Hehehe.. There's some interesting stuff about.

Look at my "suburb".. Toora, SA, pop: 32 over about 8km2

11 actual houses, and some houseboats.

Not many things more frustrating than selling something, arranging a time for the person to come and pick it up (because it's furniture or something else too large to post), and then waiting in for them to not turn up.

When I do pickups I will only give people the address 15 mins before the agreed time when the call me on the way to the suburb. I will then go out 15 mins after the agreed time if I have not had a call and not have to worry about randoms turning up and sneeking around the place.

Only had one paranoid nutter not want to do that, worked out well for me.

Well now he has turned up but in a car too small to take the whole lot even though I'd listed the dimensions and asked beforehand if he had a large enough vehicle. So now having to wait while he takes half home then comes back for the rest.

Have you had the "can I borrow your trailer" routine yet?

People who send messages saying "I've got a question for you", but don't follow it up with a question.

Still waiting for someone to respond with their question two days after they told me they had one (while I was in bed). It can't be very important.

If it's computer related, I hope they've lost everything. :)
