Do you still get to speed, pull out in front of oncoming vehicles, do U-turns in dangerous places, and pull into my driveway to drop your kid off with that version of the sticker? I haven't got my copy of the road-code to check. It's someone in the back in really small print I believe.

In the 30+ years that they've been around I've never understood their purpose.

 

I think it's an urban myth, but I remember reading a few years ago when our first child arrived that the signs were intended to alert emergency services to the presence of a child in the event of an accident.  However, that doesn't really stack up, unless parents also know (spoiler alert - they don't) and make sure to remove the sign when the kids aren't in the car (again, they don't bother) or else the emergency services spend unnecessary time looking for a child that isn't there.  Moreover, I don't imagine that emergency services would be guided by a cheap plastic sign as to how they would do their jobs, when there are so many better ways to make that call.

I feel similarly annoyed with "L" plates.  They're intended to alert people to the fact that someone's learning to drive (and presumably is to be treated with more patience), but too often the plates stay up even when the car isn't being driven by a learner driver.  The purpose is severely diminished when people misuse these plates.

Isn't there a legal requirement to display one when you are on a Learners or Restricted, and by the same token, if you are on a Full you are legally required to remove it?  Whether that is policed effectively or not is a whole different matter though.

Also, why did our house insurance go up by a third ? they sure didn't include the old price (I had to check a bank statement) and strangely there's zero explanation on our price adjustment letter...

For the same reason our insurance increased. Because you'll either be in an arbitrary coastal inundation zone or seismic risk area.

That possibility did occur (well the seismic bit did). It would just be nice if they managed to say so.

Quite a lot of effort went in to this.  To load up a mattress, a couple of tyres, a broken coffee table, a bin and large bag full of assorted junk/rubbish - presumably into a van or station wagon - drive through suburbs, probably going right past waste stations and recycling centres, up a long winding uphill road, to find the perfect place to dump it on the side of the road *for free*.

 

 

 

Could be a homeless person's possessions ? Looks like quite an idyllic spot.

All the comforts of home - bed, coffee table, blankets, washing bin. Tree nearby for ablutions ...
