I asked NZ Post about UK VAT

"Thank you for your inquiry regarding the UK VAT charges.

These charges are incorporated into the purchase price from the merchant you purchase your products from.

We are a New Zealand based company which NZ GST is included in the postage price.

There will be no additional charges to your purchase unless there is New Zealand Customs duty fees to pay upon your items arrival into NZ.

I do apologize for any inconvenience you have been caused."

So it looks like VAT is included as it's a domestic sale..

If you can it will be cheaper to buy from Amnazon UK or from a US retailer..

Im not too sure how VAT works over there with shipping to other countries or places like Jersey, but it it was VAT free then you would have thought that youshop would have setup there instead.

It sounds like NZ Post doesn't have a clue how UK VAT works. In the case of an overseas customer buying goods that are delivered temporarily to a UK address for shipping, where the receiver at the UK address does not use the goods and simply forwards them on, this is considered an indirect export and the seller does not have to charge VAT.

For this to happen, the seller has to be aware that NZ Post is acting solely as a forwarding/shipping agent for the customer. If NZ Post doesn't understand this its not likely to add information for UK sellers to their site which would make it darned near impossible to convince merchants that all the UK address is used for is for forwarding goods.

A simple call or email to HM Revenue & Customs would tell them what they need to do (which is very little apart from making it clear on their site so merchants understand the service they are providing).

Im in the process of purchasing a Nokia 1020 from Clove in Bournemouth.
No VAT to NZ of course but a 24 Pound postage 3-7 delivery time. There is a 30 Pound 1-3 day delivery option too.
Dont know how Im going to get on with GST however. But fingers crossed

I was looking at getting a phone from overseas. By the time you add on GST (which you WILL get charged), delivery fee, customs fee ($30?) it wasn't much cheaper and I had no NZ warranty.

This is a defining point. People need to do their homework. Cost is foremost, and if the differential is not high, buy it locally. Then you get into more nebulous value judgments like backup, warranty, power supplies, geographic restrictions if applicable, user licence and purchase agreements, etc.

There's no substitute for good research. The good thing is there's no end of information available. And always look at the worst case scenario and count it as a bonus when the price, etc. end up being better than the worst case.

(This is getting a bit OT) The Channel Islands are not part of the UK or EU VAT areas and orders delivered to Jersey shouldn't have VAT charged. BUT, the Channel Islands have their own GST. They also, until early this year, had a tax scheme that allowed low-value items to be sent into the UK free of VAT. That scheme has ended.

I don't know if its even possible for NZ Post to warehouse and ship directly out from the Channel Islands without passing the goods through a UK or EU facility but, even supposing they could, they would essentially be in the same situation they are in now. As long as the seller understands that its an indirect export VAT shouldn't be charged <= that's the key.

What's the story with using the US power adapter? Buy a NZ replacement, transformer?

It should be a standard USB charger, so you should just be able to use an adaptor or an existing (providing it provides enough Amps) one..

You can bend the pins on a US power adapter to make it fit an NZ socket. Works fine for me.
I got charged $26.75 for a nexus 7 without the $6 compensation cover.

Good to know they charged you more than the calculator says, but $26 is fine. I just might sneak in under the NZ$400 threshold (at current Customs exchange rates) for the new Nexus 32GB.

What day did your item ship from the US? .. Youshop page currently says there is a possible delay of 2-3 days.. just wondering how accurate that is & when I can expect my nexus 7 (2013)
