gzt: That's exactly what Chewy said! : ).

My guess is one of his many enemies will pick him up and fit him with an artificial heart so he can continue to function and repay his gambling debts to the syndicate. Maybe the new heart will make him less of an ass. Also he can have a tearful reunion with Kylo.

If they can bring back Darth Maul (who suffered a more serious light saber death) then they can bring back Han.

Ok I laughed but REALLY- they killed the best character in the Star Wars universe!!

My sole consolation is Rey looks pretty awesome so far and is my new (alive) favourite. There really was no need to kill Han though, surely? Chewy, meet me out back for a howl.

Yeah loved it! There was an intentional moment where I thought they were going to do the garbage chute escape again! I thought please.. no.. and luckily it didn't happen but there was a cheesy reference later. close escape!

Did anyone else notice a similarity in the Force (of cute) in BB8 and this Disney property from a time long ago in a galaxy far away?

They were planning a remake but after the aquisition of Star Wars appear to have very wisely abandoned it.

gehenna: That Adidas thing mentioned earlier in the thread is a bit of a stretch isn't it?   It's so obscure to be not even worth the effort of product placement.

Yes it is stretch, but was in the first few minutes of the film. If you read it in the context of the comment I made, my fears proved unfounded.
Product placement has become a bit of a blight on movies in general. Some subtle some not so. Disney is not averse too getting a bit of extra cash to help produce a film but to have blatant earth brands long ago, in a galaxy far away, would be stretch for anybody.

BB8 was included after Abrams saw a sphero droid a couple of years ago, wasn't it?

I think merchandising will have far more focus and benefits than any product placement.

ubergeeknz:

I thought TIE fighters did not have sealed cockpits (they certainly don't have life support) so how did Po and Fin manage to fly into space without suffocating...

The TIE fighters definitely can fly in space. Maybe a force field keeps the life support going......but they absolutely do have space capability.....That's how the the blew up the Death Star in SW VI.

I think the scene where Ren kills Han after saying there was "only one way" was a pivotal one going forward.

The "one way" may involve resolving Snoke's ambivalance about Ren because he is a Jedi who is torn by the light side of the Force. Killing his own father re-assures Snoke that Ren is the real Dark Deal.  But Ren did it to get closer to Snoke to kill him...and Han understood this....(which explains the tender moment despite having Ren's light sabre stuck through him) .....and it give Ren a chance to ultimately be free from the dark Side.

It felt in that moment like he was a doing a Severus Snake from the Harry Potter series: going so deep he looks like one of the bad guys, but really he's a good guy trying to end it all from inside the enemy camp.

I guess we'll see.....but this explain's Snokes comments and concern about Ren's ambivalence....and that after killing Han, Snoke summoned Ren to him for the next stage of his training.

Finally saw it last night. I am a massive star wars fan if you can't tell by my name.
For a frame of reference I thought all the vitriol hurled Lucas's way after Phantom Menace was totally deserved and if I could have "oki-doki" and "meesa" removed from my memory I would.

The thing I am most the disappointed in is the amount of bah humbug and nit picking in this thread to be perfectly honest.
I thought you lot of anyone in the world would've taken the movie at face value instead of sitting there for two hours trying to find things wrong with it just for the sake of it.
Try suspending your disbelief for a couple of hours and just try to enjoy something.

Maybe Freitasm can give you all a Star Wars Grinch badge?

Anyway...For me its was a solid 9/10, the only reason it is not a 10 is Admiral Ackbar didn't say the word "magnitude" when he had a perfect opportunity.
I even had my finger wagging waiting for him to say it....oh well.
I think it did its job of saying sorry for the last batch of movies by trying to get us to forget them well
It is the movie I was waiting for since walking out of return of the Jedi when I was 6.

Good enjoyable movie set at a good pace. Nothing seemed too contrived, there were nods but they were not over the top.
The new lead is solid and the new villain has a lot of potential, as does the potential story from here.
This is seriously the only movie in like 10 years that I have even remotely considered going and paying money to watch again. I sat there with a big cheesy grin on my face most of the movie.

So buggered if I know what those of you going "yawn" and "3/10 too much addidas!" were watching.

Also, "Snoke" probably is not likely to win the "Best Name For a Baddie In A Movie" award any time soon.

I haven't watched it yet (waiting for this week when everyone's out of Wellington) and don't mind the spoilers as I like to have a good story but every time I read Snoke I think of this...
