If you were old, $10 would have bought a week's groceries.

When I first went away to boarding school I was 7 1/2 and it was 1975.

We had Tuck Shop on Thursday and Sunday. On Thursdays we were allowed to spend 5 pence and on Sundays, 7 pence.

No idea what that would have been in NZ$ then, but it was enough to buy quite a lot if you were careful and bough chews that were 2 for a penny etc. Also, you could get half a Mars Bar for 7p.

In current NZ$ that is 11c and 15c respectively.

When I was a kid in the 1950's/early 1960's, we lived in Plimmerton, north of Wgtn. On a Saturday afternoon, parents would send us off to the local hall for the kids' matinee. We each got 1/- (one shilling) which was 9d (pence) for the ticket and 3d to spend in the dairy during the interval. Could get an ice cream for tuppence and some sweets for a penny. Happy days.

....... even kids could do basic arithmetic in their heads without resorting to a calculator. And teachers could spell correctly without the use of an american spell checker !

You remember when Woolworths was a department store like Farmers. Then they bought out their competition, McKenzies, and briefly became Woolworths & McKenzies, before rebranding as Deka.

That created a bit of outrage, news articles, letters to the editor etc, but the more the fuss, the more the numbers of people who refused to stand up grew, and the more the "royalists" bickered - including loudly issuing commands, insults and threats to those who didn't stand up, damned commies and long-haired hippie louts.

I suspect they gave up on the idea in the end as for a while it was such a debacle, even many royalists decided the whole thing had become such a farce, it was more respectful to the queen to just let it die a natural death.

I expect that of those remaining royalists in NZ. many may warm to the idea of a republic when Charles takes over. Perhaps not, but without wishing ill to the queen, I do relish seeing the panic when King Charles' opinions start ruffling conservative feathers.
