BurningBeard: I've tried twice on that chemtrails website to post about Doctor Nick's dodgy credentials, and asked just what the heck the Kaikoura earthquake hoopla was about. Both times my comment was removed. Seems that she only wants to hear from people who don't question her on the hard stuff.

...sounds like a conspiracy to me.....

The conspiracy and paranormal mindset is fascinating. When I've encountered someone in real life who mentions a conspiracy they believe in, or another strange belief that is at odds with evidence, more often than not, they hold a lot of these beliefs. It's not just 9/11, or an anti GM stance, not just one ghost story or bigfoot. They'll be into the whole shebang - psychics, ancient astronauts, Bermuda Triangle, cryptozooligy etc.

Hey, people are entitled to their beliefs, but I think it's sad that this stuff clearly consumes people's lives. There are protest groups out there who are literally protesting about something that is non-existent.

Do you really not hold any reservations about GM foods? Do most members of the Skeptics Society look upon anti-GM sentiment as conspiracy theory?
I don't believe GM crops is an example where the onus of proof is upon those who claim there is (or could be) something bad about it. If it turns out it was a bad idea - it's too late.
Maybe I am confusing skepticism with cynicism. Is there an Australasian Cynics Society? Perhaps I should join.

Personally, I am as concerned about GM foods as I am about foods that have been selectively bred.

As far as I'm concerned it's like many arguments... Take seatbelts for example. Yes, _occasionally_ a seatbelt could wrap your throat and kill you in an accident, but the vast majority of the time it's a good thing. Or cellphones - SO WHAT if they cause brain cancer in 0.0000001% of cases? They saved THOUSANDS of people by being available to use to call for help.

On balance, I'm happy with GM food. The same way I'm happy to wear a seatbelt, or use a cellphone.

There are no equally good alternatives to a seatbelt or a cellphone. I also don't mind holding a 300mW transmitter to my head regularly, and I wouldn't stick my finger down my throat if I realized that I'd just eaten some Monsanto soy.
I look at 'natural' genes as a perfect, clean data set. Corrupt it, loose the original, and were screwed.
I'm not against genetic modification completely, insulin producing bacteria is a fantastic example, and I sometimes dream that someone will develop AIDS for the german wasp or possum. EDIT: do wasps sleep around?

I'll admit, there's a slight tinge of worry, but as Talkiet put, it, "I am as concerned about GM foods as I am about foods that have been selectively bred."

Many good things have come from GM (vaccines, insulin for diabetics, hardy crops)), and plenty more still to come. Where I have real issues with the anti-GM stance is when a (once noble) group like Greenpeace breaks into and sabotages a crop - it goes from "just a belief" to "criminal act."
