I give the movie a 7/10
Lots of action, lots of nods to the original trilogy, and lots of fun and setups for the sequels.

I like Rey who appears to have been made to replace both Han and Luke in the new series, giving us an expert engineer/kick start jedi.  Chewy already likes her.

When Ben took off his helmet it really ruined it for me.  The way he did it was sort of silly, and he did appear super bad-ass at the start slowly becoming more human and brattish towards the end.  I would have preferred it the other way around.

Also playing Battlefront it was awesome seeing the giant scale of star cruisers crashed into the landscape.  What a sight!

Harrison, looking so old.  Some of the scenes you could see he is having difficulty moving naturally.  But he had to be cast, and although I found some of his content a little "immature" I guess that's what they were going for.  And yea, using Chewys' bowcaster.  That could have been done a little better.  If hes actually dead, we do not need to worry about any of that again.

I feel like the new trilogy will be working in stories centering on different character roles.
1st - Han Solo, bringing the millennium falcon back into the heavy story line and showing the father son relationship along with the father she never had story.
2nd - Luke Skywalker, getting over his issue with the incident, training the new Jedi & starting a new revolution for the force.
3rd - Most likely final epicness of the new characters, they have experienced so much and learned a lot from the last 2 movies, and then this will be their final epic saga.  This is where the amazing saber fights will occur leaving the best for last, and giving the old and new fans something to want more from another new series in 15 years time.

Also it appears there will be some sort of "inside awakening" within the First Order, where the brainwashed/programmed storm troopers will be starting to understand where they belong in this new age of Rebels vs empi.. First Order.

All in all would totally watch again, and looking forward to seeing the rest of the story unfold.

The Millennium Falcon door broke his leg during filming. That may have been a factor ; ).

Also imo Abrams was deliberately keeping Harrison and Fisher low key (including washed out makeup) to avoid overpowering and rendering invisible the new actors/unknowns.

You will see more powerful performances on a talkshow from Fisher or Harrison than this movie and that is an Abrams decision for better or worse.

Watched today, when almost everyone is gone from Wellington - bonus as a I paid with Mastercard so saved $5 at The Embassy ($11 instead of $16).

Enjoyed the storyline, nice nods to IV - V - VI, and not bad nod to III when they showed "poppa's" mask.

Shame she "friendzoned" Fin at the end and kissed on his forehead while he laid down in the sick bay. Of course they have to go slow, least a white heroine kiss the black guy properly in America's modern times.

Kylo doesn't look as bad ass as his grandad and sure that Supreme Leader looks like Smeagol.

Good send off to Han Solo.

Oldmanakbar: So buggered if I know what those of you going "yawn" and "3/10 too much addidas!" were watching.

I was watching an inferior remake of a superior original. But I'm happy to acknowledge that other opinions are available (-;

From recent "trilogies", the last bit is usually released in 2 films ....

Just saw Star Wars at the Burbank AMC 16 in Dolby Cinema

https://www.amctheatres.com/amc-prime

The presentation was immaculate with elecronically controlled recliner seats (back and foot rests, vibrators in the seats to shake the seat during intense moments, 64 channel Atmos Audio and the latest Dolby projector technology.

https://goo.gl/photos/s3HGjPuNPJvHWLfM7

(Excuse shaky video - camera phone shot during the trailers)

As for the movie itself, it was okay - a bit too much reminiscent of Ep 6 without too much story advancing. But I guess it sets the scene for the next two episodes.

I think I get star wars the response now.

Die-hard star wars fanboys and girls love the force awakens for its return to roots, especially after being so terribly let down by the phantom menace trilogy.

For those who can take or leave the franchise - I'm one of these - it's pretty much a modern day remake of the original, which did it all first ... and better, IMHO.

freitasm: An interesting idea here https://medium.com/@benostrower/rey-is-a-kenobi-362b5af09849#.mba2n9iel

Very convincing argument.
However, until the script is written nobody, not even the producer knows.
Unless of course, the trilogy script is already written, and not to be made up along the way....

I have watched the film, read this thread and then watched again. I have to say I am a little disappointed by some of the posters and here is why

1: What did you actually expect? 4, 5, and 6 were from a long time ago when we were kids so it has that element about it. There were no films about war in space and Moonraker was a deliberate attempt at the time to get onboard with films in space proving what a hit it was. Were you actually expecting it to be the best film ever because it was never going to be that at all.  The 2 key elements for me was that it was a massive improvement on the dross that 1, 2,3 were and you can definitely call it a Star Wars film and that they took the old actors with the new actors and melded it into something where everyone got their piece of the action and the next couple of films were handed over to the new guys to take forward (and nicely set up too)

2: This Star Wars. Its not The A Beautiful Mind or American Beauty. This is a fantasy film with plot holes you can drive a truck through. Its never going to win awards for acting, directing nor screenwriting. Its fantasy where you come in and suspend your belief in certain ideas and things that a missing for that very reason. Now we are adults from the days of 4, 5, 6 and unlike kids, can suspend our belief in things.

Other notes I made while watching:

As mentioned more than once, the BB unit is not one of a kind. This ties up the 'how can Rey understand BB8 when its one of kind'. Its not.
When Poe gets in the TIE Fighter, he takes his jacket off before strapping himself in. This ties up how Finn gets the jacket - it was never on Poe and he woke up a distance from the wreckage.
The "Adidas logo".... really?
Finn was a stormtrooper taken from his family at birth and 'programmed' to be a stormtrooper. He was not a clonetrooper and at one point, Kylo references that a clone army may do a better job. This ties up the 'he was recruited and joined like Lukes friends did in 4'
Finn says to stay low when they get in the Falcon as it confuses their tracking. This is the possible/probably reason why they were not shot when on the ground running. Also its fair to assume like a car, you can have more than one speed. This ties up the 'how do they outrun/escape the TIE Fighters on Jakku.
Snoke reminds me of the dude without the nose on Harry Potter
If Rey was Lukes daughter, surely Han would either know this when he sees her or figure it out as she becomes force aware. Surely he would know if Luke had family. I think this is why Rey is more likely to be a Kenobi and you can hear Alec Guinness' voice in that flashback scene as well.
Someone asked how Maz has the lightsaber herself and why its not explained. As she herself says 'a good question for another time' Its a trilogy, let it unfold.
Some people mentioned that Kylo Ren ends up looking like a pussy. I think the reason he starts strong and finishes weak is relevant to the good side of the force becoming more prevalent in the movie on him. In the beginning he is looking for a map piece. Then Han pops up, then Rey becomes Force aware, as the light side grows and has and effect on him both external and internal, it affects him and at the end, Snoke says to bring Ren to him to continue his training. Just like Luke in ESB where he is conflicted, Kylo Ren is too so I'm not sure why he needs to be uber when Snoke is there and if you think across the trilogy, Kylo Ren is most likely going to come back to the good side to tie it all up.
Someone said 'Oh but how does Finn know how to take out Starkiller base'. He doesn't and freely admits to Han when they arrive that he was in sanitation and would figure something out but it mainly there to get Rey.
The part where Kylo Ren is doing the mind read on Rey and talks about an island in the ocean and at the end we have a those.... islands in the ocean.

I think there is a lot of nit picking about various things in the film and because of this, you miss whats actually happening. I feel sad that some people can not appreciate a good Star Wars film for what it is - a good Star Wars film.

I agree with almost everything you mentioned there - except this line. Actually is not disagreeing but an obvservation. Like in Episode IV, V and VI the screenwriters on VII make a point of not explaining things.

It was clear in Episode IV that Obi-Wan knew more about Luke's father than he told the young man. In Episode V it is clear Yoda knows more about Luke's father than he told the young man.

I think in Episode VI Han, Leia, and Maz know more than they told Rey. Perhaps because it's their thinking that she should find out things by herself on her own time, just like Luke did all those years before her?
