Good grief. When what should be a trivial online purchase becomes an absolute debacle.

I bought a pair of shorts from the Adidas website almost three weeks ago. I got an email saying that the order was being processed and that I would receive another email once it shipped. A few days later I was wondering why this simple order hadn't yet shipped, so I clicked the order status link that was provided in the original email. It turns out that it had shipped the following day, but I hadn't received the promised email.

A tracking number was provided, saying that it was sent with Toll. Putting the number into Toll's website produced a 'number not recognised' message. There was also a 'track this shipment' link, which went off to something called DB Schenker. That showed the package being picked up in Auckland, with no further movement.

After a few more days, there was still no movement so I decided to contact DB Schenker. The only way that I could find to do this was via a form on the site. Upon filling out the details, this popped up with 'Your query has been sent to john.smith@dbschenker.com' (with a real person's name). I then immediately received a bounceback email telling me that the address john.smith@dbschenker.com doesn't exist.

I then went back to Adidas and another contact form. After answering some questions and typing out my request, I hit Submit and was presented with a redirect to 'force.com' with a message that I'm not authorised to view that page. I tried it again the following day and got the same message.

Getting supremely frustrated now, I tried to use Adidas' online chat feature. I typed out the issue and finally got a response from a real human. She informed me that it was sent via Post Haste (not Toll!) and provided a different tracking number. Fortunately I could see these messages, because I couldn't type any in response! There was a message saying 'reconnecting' and it wouldn't let me send anything back. I'm grateful that I was able to get the Post Haste tracking number...

Post Haste's site is showing the same details as DB Schenker: The package was picked up on the 9th and hasn't moved since. My next step is to contact them directly... which hopefully won't be such a nightmare!

Handsomedan: Economists stating that landlords should reduce rents for tenants during this crisis.

Like all landlords have the money to be able to do this.

FWIW I am not a landlord

That's fair enough. But also I guess reducing rent vs someone missing a payment, then moving out, trying to re-let etc.

Geektastic: Companies filling my inbox with virtue signalling emotional drivel about how they are “by my side” or “what we are doing to keep you safe”.

Let me add to that my cell company making a message appear on my phone telling me to “stay safe”.

I pay you. You provide cell service. We aren’t buddies.

Apparently *my* health is WestPac's number 1 priority. They're doing all kinds of things to ensure it, like keeping ATMs functioning.

Wondering who is number 2.

The police bring dim enough to announce that they are cutting drunk driving stops.

Fair enough to stop it, but asking for trouble to tell everyone...

I had the same problems... thought it would ship from Auckland but ended up shipping from an Australian warehouse but very slowly... tracking said had arrived in akl but hadn't even left aus and that was after about a week. Called their 0800 number who said they'd look into it and call me back never did. Emailed them again never got a response. Arrived eventually 16 days after placing the order when the delivery expectation in their website was 3-8 business days. Pretty shoddy for such a well, known brand..

Armchair experts. There are a lot of them on the Corona virus thread. At least some of them are probably right. Things could have been done differently/better/sooner/faster. Just ask Captain Hindsight.

Government bureaucracy is almost by definition slow and stupid. It is unwieldy, inefficient and inflexible. But in times like this, it is what we have. It must be tough at the top, trying to analyse and understand a shifting situation, and to make decisions that affect millions of people health-wise and financially. I am sure many things could have been done better. No doubt there will be mistakes in the future. But I am grateful for the leadership we have in this country, and the tireless efforts of the health professionals to give the best advice they can in a rapidly-changing situation.

No doubt there are good reasons for doing something one way, and not another. No doubt other approaches can be equally or more valid. The insights of the armchair experts who actually understand what they are talking about can be helpful and informative. But I imagine that the experts are aware of the alternatives and have weighed them and have made the decisions they have for a reason. I am certain they have access to the best information and the best resources. By all means ask critical questions and express reasonable doubts, but then leave them to get on with it. And leave the rehashing of past decisions to Captain Hindsight.

The inevitable rehashing pretty much *causes* the inefficiency and inflexibility.

There are constant demands for transparency and records to be made public, so *everything* must be recorded (otherwise the rehash includes accusations of coverups and conspiracy theories). Every action and decision, and the reasons for it needs to be recorded. There's no "That's obvious... just do it".

And the fear of rehashing leads to conservatism and change aversion. And a trough for consultants to feed from. Saying that "We were following the best advice" is always a safe answer, so *always* get consultants in, and the more you pay them, the better the advice must be. Committees are always a safe option, with inevitable meetings to make the most trivial decisions.

I'm not arguing against transparency of Public Service processes. Just saying that it's unfair to demand transparency and then complain about the bureaucracy.

2 Degrees commercials. I'm sorry, I know they are supposed to be good guys, but their ads are just so irritatingly infantile. Are all of their users really 12 years old?

Following on from my earlier post about getting a card replaced due to possible fraud activity.

The endless emails from all the businesses who had that card filed for payment of monthly or annual things and now get payment refusals because they are using a cancelled card....

That is not a small thing, the credit card industry is fundamentally broken with their reliance on a single number to charge things. Use paypal if its an option on places. Means it will keep recurring from whatever card you have loaded on your paypal account. Tell places that directly charge your card how inconvinent it is. Things wont change till the merchants who are the actual customers of the credit card processing push for change.

It will never happen when its run by US based companies, but hopefully something forward looking and born online like alipay or wechat will become in use here and force banks to get their A into G about sorting out the mess that is online payments. Till then you will be continuing to enter 16 digit and 3 digit number into places and hoping that none of them ever lose it to someone.

The 3 digit number was their solution for card details being compromised. Doesnt work. Stupid idea. Good job payment card industry.
