When people say they are sorry for my situation (whatever that may be). What do they have to be sorry about? Did they intend for something negative to happen to me? I know people genuinely mean well but it is such a weird (and I find it fairly patronising) thing to write.

I'm also a bit annoyed that I read what people write rather than what they mean, but that's a story for another day.

Compassion is that uniquely human ability to experience the pain of another. Maybe those who say they are sorry are just trying to express compassion.

Sure. It still annoys me.

Got recycling coming out of my ears, because they're not collecting it until level 2. My collection day is Wednesday so I'm going to have to wait another fortnight.

I actually predicted this, and of course it's still better than staying in level 3!

Whakatane. Apparently you can physically take it to the recycling centre but I'm too lazy... so it's cluttering up a spare room downstairs instead.

You've stuffed Whakatane into your spare room ? though it was a bit cosy round here.

Really, we haven't had any disruption to our recycling collection. The truck has come every second Monday at 7:20am just like clockwork before the lockdown.

I mean seriously?  Hold an online special but clear your online store of all non-applicable stock?  EG https://www.briscoes.co.nz/product/1074013/simon-gault-pre-seasoned-cast-iron-frypan-set-3-piece/ - they're removed the pricing and images.

No different to how they hide all the good stuff before the sales in store. Friends wife had a contact that worked in the junk mail industry so would go in ahead of the sale and hide the things she wanted to buy somewhere else in the store. Bit hard with a set of pots and pans but small things would go in the laundry hamper or bedding areas no problems.

When websites have an address you can email, you email it, get an autoreply saying it's not a monitored email address and give you a long list of alternative contacts.

Also the price of men's hair products!

The way some Americans try to justify their gun laws.

(For context, this post was triggered by facebook showing me a clip of some kids trying to steal from a gunstore and I foolishly started reading the comments.)

I got "triggered" by a related quiz question on Stuff website the other day.  IIRC the question was "how much did gun sales increase in the US after the US started locking down for the C-19 response".  I think the right answer was 73%.  They clearly don't know what the real enemy is.

I know I shouldn't have but I couldn't help myself.  One comment stated that some bloke had gone and out and bought himself a gun because of the pandemic so I responded sarcastically with: "Are you going to shoot the virus?"

Sure enough some womble responded with this:

That made me giggle

Frighteningly, I saw an interview with a guy in the States who had just acquired some new guns and a bulk-lot of ammo right at the start of the panic-buying season, who intended to "stand my ground" and basically shoot anyone that came onto his lawn.

His rationale was as above - only he stopped at the zombie apocalypse bit...just said there'd be looting and unrest. And his State had the "stand your ground" law, apparently (I had to look it up - it's quite frightening).

stand-your-ground law (sometimes called "line in the sand" or "no duty to retreat" law) establishes a right by which a person may defend one's self or others (right of self-defense) against threats or perceived threats, even to the point of applying lethal force
