From The Meaning of Liff by Douglas Adams

Kelling (ptcpl. vb.): The action of looking for something all over again in the places you've already looked.

I cant find my ryobi jigsaw, looked all over the place for it. Decide stuff it, I will dig the junk plugin one out of where its stored. Use it, cut the hole with the crap blade in it. Go to put it away and then I find my ryobi with the nice diablo blade in it where I was about to put the plug in one. But I looked there... I think. Im sure I looked and it wasnt there.

The reason it's frightening is that it gives the shooter (or should I say law abiding citizen) the opportunity to shoot someone on their lawn and hide behind a thin veil of "I felt threatened".

How would you like to be throwing a frisbee or kicking  a ball and have it go slightly astray, only to be shot as you step onto someone's property to collect it?

That's what can and does happen under that type of law (and many Redneck-types will use it to justify homicide).

I'd probably seek permission first. As I would now.

The difficulty is that, to seek permission, you have to cross their lawn.

Which you are allowed to do, if they do not have a gate with an intercom.

My brain. I have a pair of pliers. They are great pliers. I love those pliers. I use them all the time. I depend on them. I can't use anything else. Only those pliers work for me.

Today I had to fix a small mounting bracket. I reached for my beloved pliers. After some fiddling and a few trips back and forth to the car, the job was finished. Only now I can't find my pliers! Not a trace of them. They can only be in two places, my car or the room where I was working on the bracket. I have searched both repeatedly. The pliers are not there. They are not in the drawer where I always put them away to prevent precisely this kind of issue. They are nowhere to be found. I have no idea where they could have gone.

This kind of thing happens to me almost on a daily basis. That is why I hate my brain.

Sometimes when I can’t find a tool it’s because I left it on a nog when I put up sheet of gib. 😀

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

This must have happened to the person who built my shed. I now have two very nice Estwing hammers in my tool box, whereas before I pulled a sheet of iron off to replace it, I only had one.

Right. But the context was that in some places you're allowed to shoot someone on your lawn if you feel threatened.

Nope. Its the aliens. They take it away, examine it for signs of progress in our civilisation, sigh sadly, and put it back exactly where it was.

"A stand-your-ground law (sometimes called "line in the sand" or "no duty to retreat" law) establishes a right by which a person may defend one's self or others (right of self-defense) against threats or perceived threats, even to the point of applying lethal force"

I find that law sensible, not frightening. Why should you not have the right to defend yourself and your family? You would have the right to make a defence based on the same thing here, the only difference is that some states in the US save you the time and expense of being arrested and employing lawyers to argue the case.

My issue with that is that depending on how the legislation is worded, people can engineer a confrontation (eg, an armed person being aggressive toward an unarmed person - Zimmerman for example) with a built-in excuse to shoot someone if things aren't panning out in their favour. The ol "he's coming right for me!" *blam*blam* routine.

Even if it is worded in a way that doesn't allow an aggressor to start a confrontation, you risk having that happen anyway when you have certain states where racism is endemic and firearms are freely available.

You know, I am sure, that the law does not simply give you carte blanche to shoot people for setting foot on your lawn.

The fact that so many TV documentaries have dumbed down the narration to the point that it starts to look as though they are assuming every person watching it is a congenital idiot with no education.

Even National Geographic does it. I actually had to turn off one of their programs tonight because the endless explanation of the simplest of general knowledge points, endless repetition of what they were hoping to find (repeated no less than 3 times in 4 minutes by both the scientist and the narrator) etc was driving me potty.

I think you'd be (unpleasantly) surprised at the lack of general knowledge across the globe these days.

But agree - it's frustrating and feels patronising.

It does in Florida: "Florida’s statute says that if a person lawfully uses deadly force self-defense, then that person is “immune from criminal prosecution” in that case. In other words, if you kill someone to save yourself because you had a reasonable fear you were going to be harmed, you will not be charged with killing that person. That provision applies even if you could have gotten away from the situation safely. "

https://www.ajc.com/news/national/what-does-florida-stand-your-ground-law-say-you-can/jpSBjlmK7L7bQdSFR45E1N/

In modern America, it would not be considered unreasonable to be deathly afraid of anyone crossing your lawn for any reason, so shooting first just to be on the safe side would be an acceptable defense. If someone approaches your door in Florida, especially if that someone is black, you probably wouldn't have much trouble finding a jury of old white people who would consider your action entirely reasonable. After all, they created that ugly law in the first place.

Something small, really small, but it annoys me out of principle.

Went to the AA centre this morning to renew my driver's licence.  They have implemented some sort of electronic queing system that TXTs you when it's your turn.  (Not really necessary at the branch I was at but I can see how it will help for street facing stores).

What annoyed me was that you have to TXT a premium number to enrol in the queue, and I got charged 20 cents for that. ( They do have contingency for those who don't have cell-phones...could also apply to those with no credit in their accounts I guess.)

That's a shocker!
