My issue is that I do NOT want to be reading a story in the Press about some other 'random blogger' having access to my private data simply because random, unknown IT worker, in some random government department, couldn't make a system work with out giving public access to all my data.

The issue here is not about the blogger, the issue is about the government, which I pay, to keep data I let them have, secure!

My government can NOT keep data secure, so I'm not happy that they have access to more than they already have.

Can you explain to me in simple terms, why I should be happy to let them have more access to my data at my expense?

If the Government needs to wire tap, look at info held by other organisations and interdepartmental they should be required to make an application to the Courts.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I completely disagree with that too.

A group of all political leaders and independents from all parties should sign off on all data interception and be fully aware of it.

I didn't vote for the judges.

I don't trust judges to get this right either.

Lawyers already pick cases to bring before judges based on the known 'soft touch' nature of the judge.

We need at least 50 people in our society have full over sight of these rules, and they need to be elected by the general public, known by the general public, accountable to the general public and have the right to speak freely in the house about what they know.

Peter Dunne, for example, should have been able to make any information he chooses, public in the house. That's why we vote to have these people in power and it's the only way, in my view, we can keep an appropriate lid on the abuse that this power carries with it.

Using the Judiciary it brings it inline with other search procedures and provides oversight. It also provides the vehicle for review and challenge.

But Sh*t happens .. we can;t all go hide in a cave in case something bad is going to happen, the WINZ fiasco was mainly down to a really poor project management, even worse intrusion testing. But then using that to say the government can NOT keep data secure ?? I know of huge chunks of it that are quite secure thank you very much!

Mark that doesn't even start to cover what was wrong in WINZ.

Like you claim, I am also aware of lots of well secured information in Government agencies.

I also fully agree with you 'Sh*t happens', and that's the reason not to allow our government to collect all our data.

This 'Sh*t' just keeps happening more and more often in our government.

It's time we sent OUR government a clear and simple message - NO.

Yep. That comment was an insult to everyone who has worked for, and died for, the rights and civil liberties you enjoy every day.

Liberties that your government is slowly eroding away. They've already taken away your right to innocence until proven guilty under the file sharing law, they have laws for sale to the highest bidde (Sky City) and now they seek to erode your right to privacy. It stinks of the Patriot Act, and I'm VERY suspicious of US influence.

The growing arrogance of the current government astounds me. Paula Bennett, Tony Ryall, Hekia Parata honestly have NO [explicit deleted] IDEA what they are doing, and worse, will do or say just about anything to maintain their positions of power.

Disclaimer: I have voted for the Key National government in the past. I would not do so now.

I disagree with you AJ.

I think they have every idea of what they're doing.

They don't appear to really care at all about your right to privacy. They seem to have a public face that they like. These people like to be in the public light. They appear to like you to know everything about them.

I doubt that they would care if the government spies on them, they're already standing naked on TV One news.

Personally I don't currently care to much either. You've all seen me post on public forums for years, formed views on who I am and judge me accordingly.

But the issue here isn't about me or Paula, Tony or Hekia.

The issue is about those New Zealanders, like perhaps my wife, that choose to be private.

It appears to me that Paula and co just don't give a rats about my wife and are well aware that they're taking away her current right to the privacy she desires.
