Kopkiwi: Man how good to Colombia look? Would love it if they went all the way.

Will be tough for them.  There are 4 South American teams all 'grouped' together in the play-offs now.  This means that there is guaranteed to be (at least) one South American team in one of the semi-finals.  Conversely of course, the other three will be eliminated.

i guess it makes sense for transport/logistics to put groups together and make them play each other until the final, but wouldn't it be interesting to randomise the knockout stages :D

example; current: winner A vs 2nd B, winner B vs 2nd A

example: musical chair alternative: winner A vs 2nd B, winner B vs 2nd C, winner C vs 2nd D, winner D vs 2nd A, winner E vs 2nd B ...

:D must be a nightmare

Uruguay has basically disgraced the last and this world cup. Let's hope this pack of tosspots lose ASAP. And if there's any justice in this world, Suarez should be out of football for life - this guy isn't even fit to be kept in his own enclosure inside a zoo. He has absolutely no self-control whatsoever.

Now here'sa gem

If Argentina beat Nigeria 1-0 and Iran beat Bosnia 1-0, Nigeria and Iran with have the same points same goal difference same goals scored

Which means FIFA will flip a coin to decide who goes thru according to the rule book.

Cool!

I'm fully expecting a ban from the tournament for Suarez, if not FIFA should be ashamed of themselves.

As for the Dutch performance so far, not a great game vs. Chile but at least it was effective.
I'm confident about going up against Mexico but you never know, it's an unpredictable team :)

The WC has, as always, attracted the usual boring crowd of football haters (usually rugby fans) carping on all things that are wrong with football. But the even more unbearable crowd is, IMO, those pseudo "fans" who pretend to be interested in the game and make completely brainless commentary about the matches and/or players. Amongst the gems that I've heard include "Oh I can't believe how bad Spain has been on defence. Dani Alves has been amazing for Barcelona!". First of all, Dani Alves isn't Spanish; secondly, no one who knows anything about football would think that Dani Alves is a good defender.

And apparently the Dutch play boring, defensive football and Italians are really exciting to watch in comparison.

My mind boggles.

It goes back to playoff results now doesn't it?

It's like this:

1. Greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
2. Goal difference in all group matches;
3. Greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
However, if two or more teams are to be equal on the basis of all of these three criteria, the rankings will be based as follows:
1. Greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
2. Goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
3. Greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
4. Drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

From what I've read about FIFA they just do whatever they please. I've seen the incident, and it looks blatant to me. But, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Suarez get's away with it.

All in all, it seems like a well run tournament - so far. Coming from soccer a newbie, the only thing I don't fully "appreciate" is the diving obsession. I guess it's just part of the game. Still seems extremely unfair.

Reality according to Uruguayans

Woah, I am just speechless. How low will these people sink to defend this moron? Yeah, nothing happened, the guy bitten should suck it up (never mind that Suarez grew up as a street kid and human bites can potentially be highly infectious - given his background goodness knows what diseases he might have), and this is all just a European conspiracy. Both the Uruguay football team (and their wider society - in view of all the ridiculous defences of him in the media), as well as Liverpool (who continued to defend this guy to the hilt after he was convicted of racially abusing someone) should face up to the reality that they've done their level best to condone, if not outright encourage, his unacceptable behaviour.

What a pack of disgraceful idiots.

And apparently the Uruguayan President has come out in support of him as well *sigh*

It has certainly put FIFA in an interesting position.  They bang on about fair play and respect etc so I can't wait to see how far they are prepared to go in honouring those ideals.

On a far better note the Nigeria v Argentina game this morning was another cracker.

That's the politically correct observation, reality is leaning on corruption within and without

The verdict is out.  Suarez banned from all things football for 4 months, suspended for 9 matches for Uruguay and a $127,000 fine.

Getting off rather lightly in my view, but I do suspect that's the end of Uruguay in the WC without their main strikepower.

Most likely. Interesting that Algeria just equalised with Russia, means Russia will go home and Algeria may go through with current standings.
