If they are a small business selling their own albums you paypal directly, this will not affect them at all. If they use a large marketplace like ebay then that will collect the tax for them.

Fudge; so now our only option is Amazon USA and wait for the launch of Amazon New Zealand?

I was going to pre order a few things from Amazon Japan, and while the product page says yes, the checkout now says no.

I do have a few things on preorder .. wonder how they will be handled

If you have to go to Amazon .co.uk/.de/.jp for items now, there is almost zero chance they'll be available from Amazon NZ, should that ever exist. If they do, they'll be imports, at highly inflated prices, just as they are on Amazon.com at present.

The problem we have is that New Zealand is tiny.
I feel that a large number of sites will just stop shipping here.

To put it in to perspective, New Zealand and the city of Melbourne have about the same population :(

Yes, but you can't compare the size of the Australian economy and the purchasing power the people have there. To be honest, in Australia you don't have this sinister circle where the majority earn low wages. The salaries there are amazing and they have 25 million people with a purchasing power far beyond Nz's.

Let's no forget that Australia has 10% GST.Not 15% as New Zealand. That is why you earn more money at work there, and on the other hand that money gives you more in rent, supermarket, goods, everything.

Darn, Was hoping they would just collect the tax.

1)I bought a samsung s8 from Noel Lemming a few months ago, hadn't received it in 2 weeks. Rang them up. They said I should expect it about another 3 weeks. Cancelled my order.

Waste of time.

2) Product range is another issue, i recently bought some bathroom door knobs on amazon. I couldn't find anything in NZ to match the rest of my other door fittings (colour & style),

found something on Amazon for about half the price you pay in NZ, in 10 minutes. They were received within 5 work days, work perfectly.

Long story short. NZ is an isolated pacific island with major retail competition issues. We need companies like amazon for competition. This is a massive blow to product choice for ordinary new-zealander's.

Taken from https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/117738646/amazon-us-the-only-option-for-kiwi-online-shoppers-after-gst-change

"Shipments from Amazon's other international stores to New Zealand shipping addresses will be temporarily suspended. For these stores, further technical work is required to ensure compliance with the legislation,"

Seems they're using the word "temporarily" which I guess is encouraging.

Is that because they weren't paying attention despite having months and months of notice?

And the rest as I think Australia already had this in place and they're still being pinged as well.  I'm sure Amazon don't want to be stung with non-compliance and the global PR fallout that could bring.

Yeah, I'm sure Bezos has to use a $100 bill to light another cigar to calm himself down every time he thinks about it.

I don't really understand your point. If we were going this alone, then sure we would have a problem. But I'm fairly sure intentionally waited until Australia had done basically the same thing, and designed our legislation to be similar to theirs precisely because we knew of the problems with going it alone on something like this. It's true that things aren't perfectly the same and of course they will have to register with NZ Customs for a smaller amount of revenue (but over NZ$60k). But I strongly suspect they're similar enough and easy enough that most retailers are just going to either do both or do neither. Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.co.jp we shouldn't be surprised since they're still doing the same for Australia.

Amazon.com well after moaning about it, they eventually started shipping to Australia. I believe they were already collecting GST before the law change when needed (for purchases over AU$1000) as they have been in NZ so they had the systems in place. In any case, as others have said, they have to deal with the vagaries of US sales tax law, for quite a few states with a smaller population than NZ (albeit because of the shipping cost and times and other stuff, I expect all have far greater revenue than NZ). In fact as I understand it, it isn't just state wide either, they sometimes deal with variance in smaller localities in the US. It's true that in the past Amazon also went to some lengths to avoid collecting sales tax e.g. abandoning partners to avoid a nexus, but they seem to have mostly given up on that, they got so big and have so many different fulfillment centres they decided it didn't matter. Okay the FBA area is I believe still a mess, but that's mostly because of the unclear legal situation. If it was ever clearer, I'm fairly sure they would just comply.

AliExpress, Book Depository, eBay etc also seem to just be following Australian law. I'm sure there are a bunch of sites besides those Amazons which won't ship to Australia, and we should expect the same. But what sites other than Australian ones do you expect will ship to Australia but decide we're not worth it because of the GST requirement?

Amazon losing the ability to tender for government contracts with AWS would concern Bezos.

The retail side, probably not so much.
