I had a look around Dick Smith Lower Hutt last night. There were hardly any people in the store and those that were there certainly weren't buying.

Most products had 20% off - but when they only have such a limited range of stock left and much of it their own brands at heavily inflated prices I'm not sure how they'll sell it. 20% off a $100 RG6 TV cable or 20% off a $20 1m cat6 patch lead won't shift stock - they need to offer 75% off those products just to bring them down to a point where they're actually competing with other retailers.

I wonder what ladies clothes shops will fill the vacated retail spaces ?

Yes, very good point!   Would JB Hifi or Harvey Norman really want to take over the leases in the Westfield malls when people know that Dick Smith

had been there before?      I guess we'd need input from a retailing expert to answer that..

Absolutely right!    And even their discounted price on the Samsung S5 is not all that fabulous when I checked it on Pricespy.    Middle  of the pack really.

HDMI cables for EVERYONE!

Get some of the longer HDMI cables & your kids can use them for skipping at home.   Buy 35 and donate them to your local school to use for skipping and jump rope classes.

Long hot summer?   Buy some short HDMI cables & use to secure your hammock to your fav. trees.

I visited the local sinking ship on Friday, just to have a look.

Overpriced cables for Africa was my main impression.

Went in just now to look around. Saw heaps of people go to the counter to check what things cost and not buy. I did that for a few things. Still waaaaay too much for a place that will give no after sales support.

Yes i was ready to spend like $600 on a laptop last night after seeing 1 online and then taking 20% off that price, went in found out that online price already includes the 20% off and walked back out.

Saw another laptop with a RRP of 1299 DSE wants 1199 yet they say it's 20% off so their math is not correct either :P

As the receivers are paying for the services of liquidation experts we can expect them to extract the best prices possible over a eight week period.   They probably have the process well and truly sorted from doing dozens of retail liquidations.    Any really good bargains could be weeks away.

I checked a few of their "fire sale prices", but they are still above the regular prices from Harvey, Noel, or PB Tech.

Their high priced experts need to get out of their swanky offices and check the market.

Exactly.

I went in to Featherston Street while wandering past. I thought I could use a couple of decent sized USB memory sticks. They had their 64GB USB ones marked down from $50 to $36 as the super-special clearance price. So I went away and bought the same capacity, in a better spec (USB3 compared to USB2) from PB Tech for $28. Which was their regular price.

They also had a cable I need a couple of, regular price $29.95, 40% off marked down price $17.97. Trouble is I need a few, and the regular price at Jaycar for the same thing is $5.40 (or $5.10 for 4 or more).

Unsurprising that they aren't shifting stock! Or that I was about the only customer in there.

I had a look in the Lyall Bay store on Saturday. Plenty of people walked in - then out again without buying anything. There's no obvious value to this 'sale'.

I visited two stores in Auckland today with Nate who was looking for a Kindle. Lots of people in both with very few buying anything. I overhead quite a few people commenting on how expensive things were.

There is actually very little stock left in their stores if you look beyond the thousands of phone cases and cable area full of totally overpriced HDMI, Ethernet and RG6 cables. When they're still trying to sell Dick Smith branded 1.5m HDMI cables for $39.98 that were 50c before Xmas they're not going to sell many. The going price for a 1.5m HDMI cable is $6.48 which is what PB Tech sell them for.
