With at least eight stores coming to mind in the greater Wellington region it's a wonder they didn't try consolidating a few.
It is not good for me that DSE are closing.
Our local DSE store still had a few bits and pieces you cannot buy elsewhere, such as tools. Staff were good too.
Jaycar is one bridge too far away to make a quick dash.
amiga500: Big 'CLOSING DOWN SALE' sign just gone up at front door of DSE Riccarton, about 4 metres long. More signage all around shop.
Hopefully JB Hifi will take over that real estate. It's about time they had a presence in Christchurch.

That Riccarton DSE is a much bigger shop than the only JB Hifi I had a quick look in a year or two ago. I think it was in Queen St Auckland.

Maybe tomorrow more discounts will turn up then? As if they were putting the signs up tonight, to be ready for tomorrow.

They've dropped the ball...
5 years of 'rebuild money' in Christchurch, but they decided to move into sudentville AKA Dunedin.
Damn! A sale and I already have enough HDMI cables.....

the Queen St JB HiFi is (by some way) the smallest one they have (It doesn't even sell TVs).
It would be good if they could score some space in Christchurch - I imagine a lot of retailers will have their eyes on that space, and it may be in one particular retailer's interests to block JB (and they'd have the cash to do it).

They were in Dunedin before the Quakes (Just? Maybe they opened shortly after the quakes?)
I know they have been trying to get sites in CHCH. Rents are expensive (less space available), and some of the sites they've looked at have been taken away from them/blocked by another (much bigger in NZ) player. I heard they had signed up to a site in CHCH and were about to push GO, when the Feb quakes hit, and the building was destroyed. It isn't easy to find a site big enough, with low enough rentals and in the right place in a constrained commercial real estate market. I'm sure that Christchurch is a city they know they need to be in (IMO more than one store too).

That 'shop blocking' seems to be quite common. I remember when I was working for Dick Smith in Wellington, our area manager bragging about how they paid over the odds to secure the new store in the top of Queensgate mall (when they already had a much more sensibly sized/shaped Queensgate store) just to block JB HiFi from moving in.
Blocking others is the same reason that countdown still run 2 seperate and rather poorly maintained supermarkets in the glenfield mall. They also dragged out pak n saves application for their wairau site for as long as possible.
Just drove me to go to New World even more for the odd occasions I feel I have to endure supermarket shopping.

It happens on a large scale.
Look what goes on every time Ikea threaten to move to NZ and become a market disruptor....

They moved into the Meridian in October 2010, so just after the original earthquake but they'd secured the space way before Christchurch got shaky. I was still living in Christchurch at the time and my sister-in-law got me a JB Hifi gift card for my birthday not knowing they weren't in Christchurch.
Here's the original news article about it: http://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/131764/australian-stores-move-meridian
An interesting quote:
A store was planned for Christchurch, and regional centres Invercargill and Nelson were also being considered, Mr Cremen said.
