Dynamic:

The Kindle I have had an eye on is now at 30% off, but its annoying you cannot check store stock (at least as far as I can see).

I live in Brisbane, and the entire city is out of Kindles (I bought what according to what I could find with the online stock checking was the last one). I imagine your local city is similar. And yes, store stock checking online is basically pointless as it's no longer all that accurate.

Sam91:

Just remembered a recent Dick Smith experience of mine. During the December clearance, I was offered a Panasonic 50" led display model TV for $400. But I discovered that there was something wrong with the picture. I was about to walk away from the deal, but I asked if it could be a problem with the HDMI switch. Another salesperson said there is definitely a problem with the switch and TV will be fine. He switched the TV to another input, and it was fine. My understanding is it had been that way for a number of years, and the staff were unable to get funding for a replacement switch. So basically, any tv sitting in that position never had a chance of selling... Sums up Dick Smith's demise.

I bought the TV in the end : )

If we are reminiscing, I bought a WDTV there years ago. She asked if I want extra warranty, I said no, she said why, I said I don't want that thanks, and she raised her voice and said  WHY NOT?  I was shocked. I should have ticked her off loudly, and demanded to see the manager, but her attitude and raised voice took me back. Never ever come across that before, and I doubt I ever will again. Shocking

This type of rude and aggressive up-selling b.s. is why some people try to avoid buying at retail shops.     To be fair to DSE I have had even more polite but persistent up-selling at Harvey Norman and elsewhere.

I had it second-hand about five or six years ago.

when a friendly salesman at (Noel Leemings from memory) tried to take advantage of lack of knowledge and confusion on a relatives part when they had just bought a TV. He was trying to tell them they needed a Pudney HDMI cable and as a package deal he would give it to them for $150 instead of $200, and spouting a wall of incomprehensible technobabble about how much better than the others it was, and how the TV wouldn't work without it (despite the fact she had nothing at the time that needed HDMI to connect, apart from the aerial she only had a VCR to connect, which should have been abundantly clear from what she told him).

In my book, his upsell and the way he was doing it was clearly deceptive, and skirting outright fraud.

Fortunately I was there, and couldn't control myself. I just started laughing (so hard I practically inhaled my tongue!). When I had regained control I pointed out that I could get the same ting at Jaycar - 3 for $30 at the time, and then told her I had a spare she could borrow to use in the meantime, if ever she got anything that needed HDMI. It's fair to say I got the evil eye from him.

(While I'm not an expert by any means, but for some reason I tend to bet press-ganged into tagging along when members of the extended family but TVs and suchlike).

Some of the more expensive one will be better quality, and more durable if regularly pulling them in and out, as the cheap ones can fail at the connectors and joints. But in terms of basic function, and $5 cable will usually perform as well as an expensive one. SO usally they are different, but the regular consumer wouldn't notice any difference.

Last time I was looking around DSE Riccarton I overheard a lady saying to her partner 'They don't seem to have sold much.'    I didn't hear what the guy said if anything but they seemed to be a couple who had just popped in to see what bargains were on sale not a regular 'demise' monitor as I seem to be!   She seemed quite surprised.     I suppose that the reverse auction model of reducing prices each week must be a sound one as the liquidators have a lot of experience, but it surely makes for a long and drawn out process.

Coming up to five weeks of the sale, guess it will be 40% to 90% this Thursday??

It will be the same as banks in Europe where they charge customers to look after their money, but the liquidators will pay us to take away the unsold HDMI cables...

I think I'll go in and scoop up 1000 unsold HDMI cables when they're free and take them to the scrap metal dealer. tongue-out

With the Sony store now closed and the imminent disappearance of Dicky's from Featherston St., the big cheeses at Warehouse Group who decided to set up a Noel Leemings shop in central Wellington a year or so ago must still be celebrating now.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Just had a look in the Featherston Street store as I'm looking for some headphones for running/gym etc. Nothing of any note in there anymore.

Yeah, it is a bit of a concern for competition though, in the IWIN (I want it now) market. But I guess they are still competing with online stores.

Just checking the HDMI prices & I overheard two customers actually looking for some type of HDMI cable!!

The same seven display laptops are still there. I don't think DSE Riccarton has sold a laptop in weeks, assuming they only have display ones left. They used to have more like 15 to 20 on display.
