New annoyance: media that bray about 'second earths' being discovered when astronomers announce indirect evidence of rocky planets of indeterminate size that might be in the zone where liquid water could exist. Yay, let's all move to Mars and Venus.

The Police themselves have some peculiar grammatical mannerisms as well.

If you watch Police 10-7, you will have seen them describing the commission of crimes in the following manner:

"Then he's come out onto Pippin Road and he's gone up to the junction with Cox Road and then he's abandoned the vehicle."

as opposed to the far more linguistically appropriate

"Then he came out onto Pippin Road and went up to the junction with Cox Road, where he abandoned the vehicle."

D'oh, people.

Whats wrong with that? Its science and discovery. Ive not heard of any exo planet being described as a second earth. Any exoplanet could well be a second earth if it was in the goldilocks zone. If such a planet was in that zone, water could well exist, and water is very common in our solar system. Mars and Venus? Whats that got to do with it? Mars had water thats a known fact, water no doubt still exists on Mars. Venus? Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system. By far, even though Mercury is far closer. I don't see the comparison.

I sense a need to go conspiracy ?

Whats the "doh" for? To denigrate any replies?

A "moderate" 3.8 magnitude earthquake wobbled Christchurch on Sunday afternoon.

NZ have many many many EQ's per year. Why the need for a ChCh 3.8 article? Slow news day?

The d'oh is for the media that portray every non-gaseous planet discovery in the habitable zone as 'earth-like', with nothing to base that on other than the planet being non-gaseous and in the zone. This also describes Mar and Venus. Both are in the so-called Goldilocks zone from the perspective of another star, both are rocky, gee that must mean both are second earths with lush jungles and cascading waterfalls. I have seen that term used in various newspapers, as well as on CNN. It is nothing more than overblown journalistic hyperbole based on pure ignorance. There is no way, with current technology, that we can say any planet around any other star is 'earth-like' or anything else. Hence my comment. It is called jumping to conclusions, by a huge margin, and well deserving of a d'oh.

Fair enough. Ive not seen that frequency of earth like, or taken it as "Earth" like. Perhaps some journalistic licence, but when I read science articles, I forego the Stuff attitudes and focus on the science.But I see your point.

Just had a shake, I feel them every 3 months apart it seems. Rare. What was it? 3.8 according to GeoNet Rapid. Spooky.

Apologies if this got picked already - now a bit TLDR - but

TV scheduling that is simply a lie. Take this evening, for example. I was looking forward to the silly but fun Guardians of the Galaxy, scheduled to begin at 2030.

For some unexplained reason - which was not apologised for either - some asinine reality show ran until 2045, messing up the start of the film which began late with not the least hint as to why.

Urban myths that are believed to be true by the majority of the population.

Two things come to mind just now, white tailed spider bites being poisonous or causing bacterial infections - there is no evidence of this.

Another, that sugar causes a sugar rush in children and will make them hyperactive or naughty. Again, this is quite untrue. But, I hear this so many times, perhaps as a way to excuse childrens behaviour?

Along this line - something that really pisses me off:

I happen to like Wheeler Dealers on Sky Discovery Turbo (mainly to see the Edd China bits, not so much the other guy). All the older programmes were made in two parts. The Sky EPG will show, for example, "Wheeler Dealers - Jag Mk II ....". They don't say whether it's Part 1 or Part 2 - and there's no series link. So if you've seen Part 1 there is absolutely no way tell if a subsequent showing of "Jag Mk II" is Part 2 or one of the many re-screenings of Part 1 that they put up. You really have to individually set each one to record and then go through and check them. There's currently dozens of showings each week - most of which are re-runs within the week.

First world problem but I find it this intensely annoying and frustrating - another example of Sky's lack of real consideration for their customers.
