Flag change will supposedly give us more exposure of our brand.
TPPA is just a Pacific rim Free Trade Agreement. We like FTA's as we chase them a lot, so to bow out of a Pacific countries FTA would be a bad move.
How can we sell our wares when they are tariffed and our competitors aren't? We can't
TeaLeaf:
the question pops up at a very good timing to distract from extreme political issues, lack of action on the auckland housing bubble, tppa etc
the question should be do you want to change the countries identity and psyche just so we are being diverted from serious issues.
pfffft aussie flag too similar theory. yeah thats a problem all of a sudden.
The flag doesn't change our psyche or identity, it advertises it to the globe.
I think your assertion that the flag is for diversion is a bit, I mean a lot, off track. Conspiracy theory

TeaLeaf:<snip> (id like to know who you would think would come to protect NZ should it be threatened, or what ties go behind closed doors you just want to dismiss).
Great Britain lost the capability and will to defend Australia or New Zealand about 70 years ago, when I was born.
The "closed door ties" bit confuses me, but any covert agreement is probably with the USA, not with the Mother Country.
EDIT: Flags are not "fun" or "trendy" - they are just a form of national identification.
I'm not sure I agree with that entirely. Certainly the Second WW created socio-economic upheavals that made maintaining both the Empire and the necessary Armed Forces much much harder. There are also more than a handful of countries that are, frankly, much worse off without Britain than they ever were with it. I know plenty of people in Britain who remain quietly outraged at the ruin politicians have wrought on the nation since the War. A friend of mine's father flew Mosquitos in the War and when I last saw him a couple of years ago, he opined over tea that he felt he and his comrades had "Largely wasted our time and lives because subsequent governments have just destroyed what we fought to save." or words to that effect.
Indeed, in a genuine shooting war, I am not convinced Britain could actually defend itself any longer after decades of government cuts to defence spending in order to fund the EU and various other pet causes.
That aside, if (say) Indonesia were to cause serious ructions in the area, the projection of force of a Trident submarine appearing and then disappearing is no small matter.
It's fair to say that the Nimitz battlegroup would be even more impressive - but they may only turn up if Britain supports a request for example.

If we're a "brand", e might as well give up now. :(

Sure we can. They're called bilateral trade agreements, as in what we have with China. The TPPA is driven by American corporate interests, not national trading interests.

There are real issues facing this country that need to be addressed. So John Key goes off and spends $20+ million on a flag referendum that is in no way urgent and could be held at any time in the future, if at all. Call it what you like.

We tariff goods from others. Almost all clothes and shoes in NZ are from overseas. We add 10% to those before GST is calculated.

man i was only showing an extremely unlikely scenario of how we are tied to the commonwealth. didnt expect a full explanation. :-) i think the games are the most enjoyable part.
perhaps i am sceptical about the timing of flag change, but explain why it popped up after all these years at that exact point in time?
and again mike im so not sure what you meant by me thinking i know, and noone else does. knows what? i dont think i know any better than the person next to me or the man across the road. my sentence about votes on the new flag and demohraphic if thats what you meant are purely sarcasm (ie i have no clue) and again in relation to how totally random all of this feels.
i felt it was all very rushed and we had all these flags and a couple of good ones. the current one, i dont mind, but i dont believe its the polished finished product is it? i also think it looks better on paper than on a flag. just my opinion.
so i hope they have the flag fluttering in a picture as well an icon. they should have done that to begin with.
Canada chose its flag by a vote in Parliament. However, the process leading up to the vote was very controversial according to the wikipedia articles. Would have been a whole lot cheaper than what NZ is doing.
What Nigel Latta has said on FB are very good reasons why to not change the flag imo. But each to their own vote though.
