GV27:

Yet almost all the Auckland MPs, Labour, National etc, were, and many including Councillors were either doing the same or on the ground in the affected areas. Actual leadership isn't just sitting back and being told things, it's being a visible presence and getting messages out to people who need them.

Yup. Friend of mine lives in a flooded area and his local former MP was going door to door, house to house checking up on people. And note that's "former", he wasn't doing it for the votes, he was doing it because that's what an effective leader/public servant/whatever does.

The mayor seems a bit like other notable populist politicians, great at complaining about everything and promising to drain the swamp before he gets elected but about as useful as a Trump during Covid when the ordure enters the air conditioning.

As an aside, does anyone know where I can find the current Harbour Bridge wind-speed? I've got staff that I don't want stranded here and am looking to send home early if needed.

There's one at Northcote Point:

You can also go to a site like Weather Underground and pick your preferred data location off the map, this being the closest AFAICT.

Not so much rain here on the Shore today - definitely nowhere near as bad as Friday - but windy as hell.

I just got an emergency alert on my phone, which I just closed coz it made the phone (Samsung S21) make a horrible sound, now I can't find it to read it.

Where do those messages get saved?

@throbb thank you, not sure burying those messages so deep in the phone is a good idea.

Great it has gone from a orange to a red rain warning in Rotorua , in 2 minds now because i love a big storm and were i live it will never flood but Ngongotaha is in trouble if it comes down as hard as they are saying it will.

An interview with Wayne Brown (which I read as being rather combative) and why his response to the flood was so slow; I interpreted it as "not my fault" - but as someone else pointed out earlier as the mayor he "carries the can" for the council.

Hopefully there'll be a non-paywalled version on another news site somewhere.

Back on topic: Woke to some pretty heavy and sustained rain this morning.

Thankfully our road has gotten away with it again, so the stormwater culverts are doing their jobs here, unlike our friends' on Friday.

Yet to hear if they have been affected again. Fingers crossed that many of those already affected are not further affected and that anyone who wasn't, stays that way!

I wonder if the media ever considered that they actually are “drongos”?

I’m using the MetService rain radar to make my own decisions.

There’s a copy paste on reddit in r/NewZealand

It’s quite a read.

The rain here was nowhere near Friday's level. Mostly just drizzle now, but still quite windy.
