Yes sure - a large tsunami could occur from a large event in that area. Official response to the events yesterday just serve further to convince some of the general public that they're fear-mongering sensationalists. You shouldn't need to visit an offshore website like PTWC to get accurate information about WTF is going on in NZ. One might even hope that more timely, more detailed, and more accurate information should be freely available from official sources in NZ.

Yes it all seems a bit 'boy crying Wolf'-ish. Unfortunately that could mean that in the future people may be less likely to head for higher ground when they really DO need to.

Am I wrong, but I gathered that the residents are well aware of tsunami risks, and scarpered of their own accord? Not saying that to defend the authorities, but it seemed to me that the alert started by being self driven, which IMHO is key.

But, this event has raised gaps, they should look at Japan, and setup app alerts etc. That would be so easy today. Make an app, locals get it, auto alert. Not everyone may get or be able to get the app, but its a start.

And that is what the advice is, "if you feel strong shaking at the coast don't wait for official notices move to high ground"

Fair point - so treat yesterday as a tsunami drill? I think there's more to this though - Civil Defence seemed pretty disorganised or at least unprepared.

Not a drill as such but prudent advice given the fault system close to the epicentre. Most of the residents had taken the Get Thru advice and already moved before the EM advisory. It was also a good

time to practice anyway and it is not a case that EM do this numerous times a year.

But at the end if the day we are an EQ country, and CHC has made all of us fully aware of what to do and why. There is no place in NZ that is free from such events. CHC faults were unknown. If I was in that situation (again) I'd react, and use the authorities for update info. I'll look after me and the fandamily, and not expect any info to get to me within seconds, although that would be helpful. Then once we are safe, on higher ground if need be, I;m then looking for updates. I haven't followed this event, so unsure how long it took before any information was available, but none of us can expect anyone else to look after us in those first two minutes, and the next half hour. After that, then I do want info to be available.

Tsunami's are not waves they are a surge that have a body of water that can be 100's of KM behind it driving it. They travel at very high speed 800km/H plus and can push a long way in land. If you are at sea level and you can see the tsunami it is too late.

This activity can drastically alter how current flows act in the area for several days after, boaties need to take extra caution and be very vigilant.

Reporting of people who die in a certain way by euphemism in the quaint belief that not naming the method - and then printing a list of places you can "get help" underneath - will somehow act to reduce the number of people using that method....

It is surely abundantly obvious that by printing that list beneath every article on the subject you are telling the reader what actually happened...

There are censorship laws about reporting that sort of stuff. Absurd but still the case even when people are openly discussing it on FB etc, that real news cant say it.

I never thought I'd come up with anything for this thread... But it happened...

We're into the election campaign mode for our local bodies, and I'm pretty ticked about candidates that say that they're going to do this or that if they're elected... Trouble is - the this or that are blatantly things that are well outside of the council oversight - and they have no show at all at delivering on these promises... Annoying...

I understand all that, which is why I queried how slow it was, travelling 125km in an hour.
