Hmm... wonder if thats the 2nd Gen model. PriceSpy is showing $398 as the cheapest price. And that's more inline with what we paid.

For the avoidance of doubt, that particular product is fulfilled by Dick Smith Electronics rather than Dick Smith, which means it's Kogan HK (Hong Kong) rather than Kogan Australia and will be the drop-shipped asian model.

I personally wouldn't buy from Dick Smith/Kogan because you have to be extremely alert to determine whether you're going to be stung with GST at the border.

OK, so...

In January 2015 my daughter used the money she got from relatives for Christmas, plus a top up from us, to buy an HP laptop from Dick Smith. In the last day or so it has developed a pretty major fault - it doesn't power on any more. She's tried a few tricks that she googled, but it's still a brick at this point.

I wasn't present when it was purchased, but knowing my daughter can be hard on things my wife paid extra for an extended warranty. HP's standard 12 month warranty ran out four months ago so now we're into the two year extended warranty period. In the warranty document it says:

Who is the insurer?
... The Dick Smith Premium Care Product Protection Plan is underwritten and issued by the Virginia Surety Company, Inc... The Warranty Group Australasia Pty Ltd... [looking at the email address it's part of the same company as the underwriter] performs administrative policy functions on Our behalf... Dick Smith Premium Care Product Protection Plan is distributed by DSE (NZ) LIMITED...

Hassle-free cover
... If you have any problems with Your Covered Item once the Manufacturer's Warranty has expired simply contact [0800 number], or lodge a claim online at [underwriter/administrator's website].

I find it interesting that the DSE website doesn't seem to mention extended warranties though. All it says is:

Faulty Stock – Purchased on or before 4 January 2016
a) Non Dick Smith Branded Items
The Receivers recommend that you contact the manufacturer directly...

Does this imply extended warranties are now worthless? If they were being honoured, wouldn't the website say to contact the underwriter/administrator?

You have the option of going down the CGA route with the manufacturer if you don't have any luck with contacting the underwriters.

The extended warranties still continue as normal :) If you contact them on the 0800 number they should get you sorted.

Yes - I've just been on the phone and the underwriters are in control (phew!). It's a useful piece of information I think could be added to the DSE website...

I got the first e-mail from that Kogan crowd and saw a good offer on an SSD (which is something I'm in the market for). Followed the link on the e-mail but couldn't find it anywhere. Turns out it had taken me to the Australian shop, and most of the products there aren't even available in NZ! Waste of time to me, so I promptly unsubscribed. Looks like PB Tech will be getting more of my patronage then.
