I have a pair of shoes coming from the states, I've got a UPS tracking number but since its hit NZ shores there has been no updates (been in NZ for 2 days now).
There is a chance that it will exceed the $60 duty threshold (item was $189usd), my question is do I need to wait for a NZ tracking number i.e courier post or some other nz courier comapny or if I ring them with the UPS tracking number will that suffice?
I'd rather not wait up to a week for snail mail to arrive (snail mail in this day and age seems bizarre).

networkn: I've bought in shoes recently declared as shoes clearly and didn't get hit. Are you sure it's not just a cost threshold thing?

I'm pretty sure you are right. Customs don't collect if the total payable is less than $60. For goods which don't attract duty, and only have GST on them, this means the threshold is $400. For goods with duty it depends on the applicable rate for that item, but from memory for clothes and shoes the threshold is effectively around $225. More details are here:
