Hi,

I did a couple of searches on this site, the two threads I found are a little old now and likely no longer relevant.

I am heading to Japan in May for three weeks and looking for a way to handle my data/voice requirements:

1. Ability to google map at any time, look up a few things - maybe 1gb over the whole 3 weeks? (I will do 99% browsing/news/geekzone on laptop on wifi in the evenings.)
2. Wife might use max 20 minutes voice calling (local/tolls around Japan - no international) over the three weeks.

We both have Samsung Galaxy III phones, mine the old I9300, hers the I9305 - so, a pre-paid Sim card with a 1 month plan similar to NZ would be ideal ( X mins, 1gb data and .. etc)

Failing that we'd be fine buying a phone with a pre-paid sim, and just top it up once a year when we're over there.

The Japan plans/sites are a minefield, and I am trying to translate via very non-tech wife - so I am hoping someone might have already done the research and can offer some uptodate advice?

Thanks.

I would recommend these guys:
https://www.econnectjapan.com/
They rent sim cards and hotspots. Just don't go near the "low speed 300k unlimited" plan. Its slower than dial up and feels like like sharing a 300k pipe with a hundred people. Semi usable after 11pm however.
They offer unlimited Y!Mobile (previously EMOBILE network) hotspots for use in cities, and NTT DoCoMo 1gb/3gb data sims for use everywhere.
