According to an item on RNZ, Kiwis are the world's fifth-largest consumers of pornography on the site Pornhub, which releases nationality breakdowns of its users every year. Not bad for a country of less than 6 million!

blakamin:

Why is it gross?

What is wrong with porn?

Do the people in those films look happy to you? Who appears to hold the 'power' in those movies? Do you think the people in those films would 'choose' it as a career over something else? Even though they may 'choose' to participate in it, what you're watching is abuse and is harmful. It is exploitative. How can you take pleasure in that? Never mind the other problems with it like encouraging misogyny, sexual addiction and youth's skewed perception of intimacy.

Seems to me porn is similar to watching street people paid to fight on camera. Are they adults doing it willingly for pay? Is it therefore ok to support that and normalise it by watching it since I enjoy it? Maybe we could ask them to cut body parts off next if they are willing and we are paying.

There is nothing wrong with sex, there is a lot wrong with the pornography industry.

OK, I am absolutely no expert on porn but I have seen multiple interviews over the years with actors in the industry and many (women) insist that it is their chosen profession and they do enjoy it. I can't judge if this is true or not but it is what people claim. I don't doubt that some porn certainly is abusive and probably should be illegal for that reason, but I don't see a problem with stuff that just shows people having different kinds of sex and enjoying it. Maybe it is also worth pointing out that according to the article I cited, 35% of porn consumers in New Zealand are women, also above the international average.
