I want to do some work setting up a family tree, but the  best looking sites, like MyHeritage start at $15 a month and while I'm keen to do this, I don't feel I would get that sort of value from it.

Make sure you read the Ts&Cs on signup

Ie the 23&Me Ts&Cs are shocking, they own your DNA profile, and can do whatever you they like with it, including handing it off to law enforcement, Heath insurance companies, or even the pharmaceutical company that’s a significant owner of their stock.
