Today December 16th is my 50th anniversary of joining the old NZPO Telecom division and a Junior Mechanician at the Mt Roskill step office here in Auckland.

It’s funny how when you measure out 50 years it always falls on the same calendar day as it was 50 years ago, in this case Monday.  Soon learned that reading batteries without a dust coat on would lead to holly pairs of jeans.  Since then I have seen the Good, Bad and the Ugly of the industry.

The good in the 1990 ~ 2010, The bad = now and the Ugly in the old NZPO days of bloated Bureaucracy and suppress all thoughts of better technology and processes.

Currently the CPE (PBX) industry I’m in now I feel is in a downward spiral with a race to the bottom being allot of the current resellers and dealer philosophy these days.  Next year I think will be my last in the industry as quite frankly I’m sick of it. The dumbing down way we are going, people who can't read manuals and tech bulletins even where they are given to them on training courses...

If I were to start again from school I would go into the IT industry as my son has done.   The only part of the telco industry that seems to be going anywhere at present is the cellular carrier side and I have a feeling that will go the same way as they become a dumb pipe over the next 5 ~ 10 years..

Lets see what the next 50 years brings.   Roll on the communications implants  ..

Regards,

Old3eyes

Congrats.

You've seen some big tech changes in your career then, especially as everything goes digital.

Congratulations!

The times certainly are changing, especially with the move towards VoIP which is both good and bad. I've seen some horribly configured systems recently where the people who have installed and configured have clearly from IT backgrounds and clearly lack any understanding of how to actually deploy a PBX that is usable for the end user.

I think there are a lot of parallels with the security industry. There are still people installing analogue CCTV cameras because it's all they know about and failing to recognize that IP based monitoring is now essential.

Networking is something not everybody can easily grasp, but I feel many people coming into the industry who may "get" IT don't have the base to actually understand how to build usable products.

Congratulations to the OP!

Steve Biddle (the ability to 'tag' here would be cool) - Where did you learn all your networking skills from? Must've been a great school since you seem to know a lot about these things! ;)

This is not true, is it? Well, in your case maybe but not generally?

Thanx all for the best wishes.  Yes I did some other 50 year calculations and they were on the same day of the week as they were 50 years before or after..    i.e Was married on a Saturday and when the 50 years falls due it will also be a Saturday.

John R.  14 years with Voda.  Now you need a career change and move the the old TelstraClear network side to sort them out..

The cycle is a 28 year one with 6-11-11 and 11-11-6 components so 50 is one combination.

50 years in Telco must include some lost weeks and feel like a lifetime :D
