If I see these words again............

apologies over the comments

It was an error of judgment

BS. You got caught for [insert any offence/bad thing here] and now you apologise and made an error of judgement?? Truth be known, is that your pi$$ed that you got caught, end of story.

"he's sorry for his actions and has let the school and the wider community down."  yep, I bet he is..... More sorry that he got caught.

This is NOT taking responsibility. Im looking for a wet bus ticket and to give a very high level of support....

I agree.

Ali Williams and his cocaine arrest is a classic example. He was sorry only because he got caught.

What I really want to know is what is a rape culture, and how is it that we have been diagnosed as having one?

I for one have never raped anyone, and I dare say over 99% of people have never raped anyone, doesn't that still mean that nearly everyone doesn't rape others?

What I actually think we have is a culture that has a fear of sex for some perverse reason and we don't deal with sex correctly to begin with.

What I want to know is why the school is involved at all? Did these boys commit the acts at school, or send the messages from school, or using school equipment?

The facebook post that started it said "if you don't take advantage of a drunk girl, you're not a true Wc boy".

Must be from a Wc boy - note correct use of "you're".

I assume because students man my this type of comment are a danger to other students. That's a good reason.

The younger generation is more open to discuss sexual matters more freely  and have over come many of the taboos compared to older generations where there are still too many hangovers from the Victorian era . However what is still way to prevalent across generations is a lack of understanding of consent.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

It's feminist ideology that says number of separate but linked aspects of society lead to a culture/value set/attitudes, that increases the likelihood of rape occurring.

The might include pornography, objectification of women, shaming of women who are promiscuous, the way the court system treats victims of sexual assault.

The theory hold that these things collectivity contribute to poor attitudes to women, a lack of respect for appropriate consent and a culture that makes it hard for victims of sexual assault to come forward.

These aren't my views and I don't support the theory as it presented - typically positioned as a deliberate conspiracy or with blanket statements such as all men are rapists.

If you look at our society sexual assault is illegal, and punished with imprisonment.  People who commit sex crimes are reviled, even an false accusation can ruin the accused's life.

That said I do think that the court system is very hard on victims of alleged sex crimes and certainly education on consent and general sexual safety in schools would be useful.  But we knew that already.

The comments these kids made were offensive.  They have been punished, they apologised.  Excluding time travel,  I don't see what else can be done - other than education to prevent a recurrence.

Yes because we live in a tiny country in which nothing important happens on most days of the year.

Since our so called news organisations persist in Thinking NZ local news is important rather than largely irrelevant they try to make it a Big thing.....

What I find even more shocking is the nationwide murder culture we have in NZ that still hasn't been stamped out despite being present for hundred's of years. How long must this go on for before someone does something about it?

If you were a young woman you would not see this as 'a storm in a teacup'. Most men, however well-intentioned they are, have no idea how much crap girls and women have to put up with every day of their lives. This kind of thing does deserve to be taken seriously and stamped on wherever it emerges. Indifference is the same as saying women don't matter.
