Just wanting to find out what people think about the minimum wage raise, wont this make it harder for teenagers to get jobs, as employers dont have any incentive to hire young ones, which means the dole figures would go up.

Yep that's the reason why the government is against Labour's proposal of $15/hr. I think for teenagers wanting better pay, instead of putting out their hands wanting more, they perhaps need to think about upskilling and showing employers that they are worth more than the $13/hr that they do get at the moment.

It gives my boss an excuse to not raise the rate of people who are actually skilled at what they do.

As a skilled worked I see it as a bad move.

What they need to do is bring back the Youth Rate as well as increase the minimum wage...

I have been a staunch labour supporter all my life but I do think they have completely lost the plot at the moment... they are making some brave attempts to get the votes for the next election but I really don't hold any hope of anything good happening until they get a new leader...

So in reality, raising the minimum wage to $15 P/hr is an interesting proposal but its unlikely to actually happen anytime soon.

well done you found a unionist labour supporting newsletter that supports your belief and presented it as fact.

What about the FACT that I can't, as a hard worked, get a pay rise when these things happen because it goes to the unskilled workers?

Unions have their good and bad moments...

Trying to argue that a higher minimum wage does not contribute to less employment being available is quite silly.

I support bringing back the youth rate at ~$10 a few dollars less than the adult rate because I believe it's much better to have more young people working for $10/hr in entry level jobs than doing nothing getting $4.50/hr on the dole.

Youth unemployment is shockingly bad, it's a disgrace.

Getting an entry level job allows people to get some experience and skills behind them and leads to better things.

Youth unemployment is the most serious problem, and leads to all kinds of future costs.

My own view is that youth rates just lower the wage structure overall, and in many cases just displace older workers or cause a lowering or lower rate of increase of their wages.

I have similar views about the minimum wage. A low minimum just tends to reduce the overall wage bill.

My guess is the impact of this recession on youth will be lower than the last major recession, simply because there is a huge variety of choice and flexibility in training and education available these days. However, it is still a tragedy in progress which will affect NZ for many years.

That said, NZ businesses need to do way more in the area of internships and youth induction. On paper NZ employers are kind of ok in training provision, but actual practice falls way short compared to advanced economies. Thought needs to go into it, but it need not be expensive. Some good examples are needed.

People need to stop complaining about minimum wage... If you want more you obviously need to do some more work and show your employer that you deserve a higher wage rate. An increase to $15/hour wont solve your problems anyway... If you work hard your more likely to get more.

Im 17 and just got bumped up again 3 months ago to $23.25... But I work damn hard for it... And take any overtime I can fit it. :)

You get what you pay for. Pay peanuts and get monkeys. It appears to me the more stingy employers would even moan if the minimum wage was six dollars per hour.

And where are all the jobs that John Key says are going to be created. Did anybody watch Campbell live on TV3 last night.

The minimum wage increases on a regular basis. My guess is your boss (or your boss's boss) would just find another excuse.

One option is just to move on instead of banging your head against that wall. I have been offered an increase twice after indicating an intention to accept an offer and resign (two separate jobs). Took it one time, rejected it the other time. The experience is very common.

Often the situation arises because the demands of the position have changed, or you have expanded the scope of the business, and no one has yet taken the decision to upgrade the position.

Suddenly on realising the replacement cost, it's a no-brainer.

Looking at the article, it would appear that most, if not all of those leaving for Australia would not benefit from a minimum wage increase.

Looking at the article, it would appear that most, if not all of those leaving for Australia would not benefit from a minimum wage increase.

And that's one of the issues with increasing minimum wages in big leaps. It either forces companies to annoy existing staff if they don't raise their wages, or if they do rise across the board it theoretically leads to increased inflationary pressures.

IMHO the minimum wage is anti competitive and no different to price fixing.
