Yes, it's yet another VDSL thread... but with a twist :)

Some of you will have noticed that I've been desperately trying to get something faster than ADSL2+ for some time (without paying $1000/month for it!). So far, Telecom and other ISPs have rejected my VDSL orders due to my high attenuation (26.5 dB). I'm convinced that I have a line fault based on my ~1.15 km distance from the cabinet, but even then Chorus' best estimate puts me at 13 dB which is higher than the official limit of 10.8. So, even if I fixed up my line, I'd still need to hope that the Chorus tech took pity on me!

After looking at the VDSL coverage maps and cabinet locations I've come up with a Plan B, or more specifically, cabinet WHK/B (which serves the next street). My house is less than 600 m from WHK/B when following the road (or less than 400 m if Chorus is allowed to go through/above a small park). Hopefully there wouldn't be much digging required; presumably there are already ducts that the existing cables run through, and the connection to my house itself is overhead, so it'd just be the link between the two streets that would require "real" work. Even then it doesn't need to be of outstanding quality since they'll be free to rip it all back out in a few years when fibre comes along.

Does anyone have any idea what sort of ballpark cost there would be for a brand new connection like this?

Playing Devil's Advocate:
Main problem would be does chorus want to go through the amount of council premissions they'd need to go through if they have to dig up anything for one customer?

Generally speaking a Cable run is a cable run and chorus isn't likely to want to change it much.

1.15 km is just too far IMO. Over 900m I'd be very wary of even trying VDSL for VDSL.

600m is certainly more reasonably, but as for cost I'd guess too much and as above I doubt chorus would even consider it for a single customer.

Do you have line of sight to people near this cabinet or other people near the other cabinet? Maybe have a chat with some of them - if they sign up for VDSL and you pay for a decent portion of it you could set up direct wireless link and share it?

The problem is that I don't know whether it's worth doing or prohibitive, because I don't know how much it'll cost :)

Unfortunately wireless isn't practical here due to the topography; I've already tried to go down that path in the past and it ended in failure.

Edit: Forgot to say, after making my first post (before any replies) I realised that there's no harm in asking Telecom anyway so I've asked for an estimate. Fingers crossed... :P

Check out ubiquiti products from http://www.gowifi.co.nz/
I have a similar issue, I am using the above products to setup a link to feed vdsl via a repeater 3.5kms.
I have achieved 6MB in one direction and 3MB duplex with a 1ms increase in latency.
Go door knocking and see if you can lease a naked line and 24watts of power from a closer house.

Cheers

sbiddle: $20k

Ugh. That's disappointing, although it seems a bit high (last year Gen-i quoted less than $10k for fibre... but the $1k monthly fee was a killer). I'll wait and see what Telecom says but I'll prepare myself for disappointment.

Fully agree.

Ouch on the speed, that's a bit slowish.  Be interesting to know what kit you picked.

I did exactly this last week too.  Over the distance being talked about here, you're looking at a couple of NSM5's and the problem is sorted.

If you have the gold for a couple of Sextants then you should get much more.

$600 dollars really should put this problem to bed.

Hi thats 6 megabytes not 6 megabits,
Unless u fall within 150m of a cabinet this will exceed the vdsl feed

Cheers Jeremy

Would this technology allow me to share a link over s distance of about 990 metres, but without line of sight? Or am I out of luck?

Cheers

ROFL...  opps!

Yes, within 20m of the cabinet...  45mbit.

Interestingly, I got 2 more mbit just by replacing the cable from the ETP to the modem and removing the filter they installed.

What's in the way?

This stuff does not go round corners but it will punch through a bit of building and tree depending on the density.

You also need to consider what other noise you have about.

For a ptp link you're allowed 200w ERP iirc, so you can get a bit of gain on, but there is a transmit limit which I think is 4w iirc.

Read up on the RMS stuff.  The power stuff is all on that page.

ya, you've got to be thinking in terms of building 'over'.  So up one side and down the other.  I've done just that in one location.

Get busy and talk some folk into some faster nets along the path.
