I've been wanting to upgrade from ADSL2 but have been unable to due to attennuation. I would like to investigate getting the old and complex (read: DIY disaster) phone lines in the house removed.

1. Who owns the line from the telephone pole to my house? It's currently stretched tight by a tree and this doesn't look ideal.
2. Who is the best person to replace the line from where it meets the house, to the internal (also required) master splitter? It's a relatively simple (ha!) run around the exterior corner then up into lounge to a new (as yet hypothetical) master splitter. I only require 1 modem and 1 cordless phone connection, the other mishmash of wiring can be disconnected.

Cheers,
Joseph

Chorus all the way until it's internal

Coffee Baron if you are the Auckland/Waikato area if you want some work done internally.

Whoever owns the tree (i.e. the owner of the land where the tree is growing) is responsible for keeping it pruned clear of the lines.

I presume you mean ADSL2->VDSL2?
When you upgrade they should rewire for you, when my brothers house was redone they placed a master splitter where the line entered the house and ran cat5e to the new master jackpoint.

Yea but if the attenuation is already 10dB+ the ISP won't even want to run the order for it. The best way to know if it is specifically your wiring causing the issue is to get a prequal check on a couple of your neighbours' addresses. If their attenuation is significantly lower than yours then it could possibly be your home wiring, but your part of the street could also just be too far away from the nearest cabinet.

The views expressed by me are not necessarily those of my employer Chorus NZ Ltd

Correct....  similar to power lines however the power companies will at least come out and do one trim for free. Chorus will not. But Chorus will come replace the cable each time its rubbed against the tree and exposed the core or at least they did for me until we finally removed the tree.

Thanks for all the responses.

I'll try to trim the tree just to avoid any future problems.
I will also look at getting neighbours addresses checked too, this is a good idea. I'm not sure how far away from an exchange we are. I do feel like the internal wiring could be a factor, it's a shambles done by the guy who renovated our house before we bought.

Cheers,
Joseph

Yes indeed to VDSL. I applied last year, was told yes, then no after more tests.
Where the line enters the house is a good spot for a master splitter and jack point, hopefully it won't be too big of a job.

Thanks,
Joseph

Are you able to post your current modem stats? Interested to why they'd say yes and then back pedal.

Yep will post them when I'm home. The response from Spark at the time was "Sorry – we couldn’t process your application. Here’s why: After more network testing, we found that we can’t provide Spark Ultra VDSL on your line."

Joseph

Only slightly off topic, but related...

I remember reading a post on GZ that had a link to a map showing the locations of exchanges and cabinets in New Zealand. I tried looking for it but can only find a really old thread that points to the old telecomwholesale website, and I can't find a comparible map on the sparkwholesale site. Does anyone have a link for a current map?

These locations appear to be well-kept secret - I'd love to know where our local exchange is, but can't find it.

i actually Google'd mine to see where it was, and found a picture with some recognizable landmarks and the street name so was able to narrow it down from that.

not that it worries me as im cabinet fed anyways
