Since moving to a new suburb in Auckland we have had low adsl speeds average between 900-1300 kbps down and around 300 up.
Are there any tips or tricks, that could help squeeze some more speed from my connection?
We live in a rented house, So I cant make any wiring changes or anything like that.
Im on a xtra pro plan, and using a linksys wag325n router.
There are two phones plugged in, both have filters on them, Have tried disconnecting both phones, and the speeds were no better.
I have been told a reason for the slow speeds could be that the local exchange is "over subscribed"

Any help would be great, thank you

Please advise what your router downstream & upstream speeds are.

Looking at your line attenuation of 55.0 dB, your are quite some distance from the exchange. You should really have a full install done. This can sometimes be done without too much re-cabling. I'd talk to your landlord and say you want to "upgrade" the broadband connection, I'm sure they would be OK with that. Telecom charge $150 to do this.

I'd expect around a 2Mbps connection with a full install.

Ok, those speeds for your line stats are not far off from the kind of speeds you would expect. You should still get a bit more though with a full install. Also different routers will give varied results too. The speedtests don't give the full picture, as they are affected by several factors. Also take 10-20% off your sync speed (overheads) to get your potential download speed. 1664 Kbps is likely to give around 1400 d/l speed.

A full install should improve things, but is more likely to give you a more stable connection, rather than a significant boost in speed. Also, if you are getting regular disconnects, or variable speed, they can apply a different noise profile to your line. This may lower the sync speed, but can improve the d/l speed due to less packet lose, variation etc.

You should also run your speed tests off peak during the day. This gives a fair estimate of your potential speed, and then compared to evening peak time, will indicated how your speed is affected by congestion etc.

To get a full install done, you call your ISP an ask them to arrange an upgrade to full install with a central splitter. A Chorus guy will come out and install a dedicated DSL jack-point. Usually if there is a good spare pair on your internal cabling, then it will be connected to that. Else it will be a fresh cable (better).

If you are West Auckland based, I can do a full install for you, and pretest to estimate your new connection speed.

you probably have already done this...

But make sure you are using the very latest version of Linksys's firmware for your router.

I've just called telecom,

They reviewed the speeds tests I've done in the past, And then looked at the more recient tests,
They are going to do the wiring and splitter box free of charge, In the hope this might help my connection.

So Im pleased about that!

Ok splitter is installed, And we have a slight gain. Downstream has gone from 560 odd to 896, Up is still over 600

Looks like the only way I will ever get better speed is to move. I would have thought I would get better speeds than this in West Habour, as its not an old area, but Im connected to the massey exchange which is some 4.8km's away.

Massey Exchange is to have 30 odd cabinets added to it to reduce cable lengths and these are scheduled to happen mid next year. Do you know what cabinet currently serves you, this will be on a street near you with a code like MSY/DN or similar where MSY indicates its a cable joint cabinet on Massey Exchange and its cabinet DN for example. A quick walk around the block (or say 1-2km radius) should identify some of them.

Im really not too sure about this,
But it can only be a good thing if they are going to do some work on it!

I just restored the router to factory, and Im now getting 1106kbps down and 172kbps up. Which is huge change from before.
Maybe there are some tweaks I could do with the router that might help

According to Chorus's cabnetisation program schedule there is a binding upgrade on 36 cabinets off the Massey exchange starting in april 09 and should be complete by July09, this will shorten the length of some 8000 lines on the Massey Exchange.

Look, not wanting to sound negative, but one you step over the 50dB mark its just all bad bad bad, you are beyond the accepted reliable and stable connection point. By fitting a single central filter you have probably done as much as can be done. Due to the low signal level the modem will sync differently from reboot to reboot, and wane with continual changes in line condition. Any changes for higher speed will just be pretty much conincidence and most likely disappear as magically as the appeared. Your best solution is to reduce the cable length.

Ah, the Whenuipai exchange. There are some cabinets scattered around the area, so call Telecom and ask them to investigate connecting you to a closer cabinet. There is one at Clear Water Cove, and another part way up Luckens road. However, it does depend on which way the copper runs to you house. A couple of my customers that were out of luck were at Mansion Cove and Renoir st, so if ya in that area, then you too may be stuck with what ya got.
