Hey all. This is one of my only posts on this forum (though I have been avidly reading the Xnet subf since I started to suffer from the dreaded Xnet Effect), so not sure where this should go. I live in Dunedin, and have a couple of questions.

Firstly, using the http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps link to determine cabinetisation, if there is no information for Cabinet Details, does that mean that simply you are not getting a cabinet at all?

Secondly, and this is possibly related to the first, where is the "main" exchange in Dunedin? From what I understand, cabinets are fibre connections from the 'main' exchange to various other areas, in order to speed things up by replacing distance of copper lines with fibre (like, instead of house->*copper line for X km*->exchange, it goes house->*copper line for far less distance*->cabinet->*fibre to main exchange*). If this is so, and correct me if I'm wrong, this would mean that the closer you are to the 'main' exchange, the less likely you are to get a cabinet as there is little need, right?

The reason I ask, is that the flat the gf and I are moving in to next year seems to be on the "Dunedin Exchange Area", with no info on Cabinet Details. I can only assume then that I am close to the 'main' exchange and don't really require one.

Thirdly, if the above is true, would this mean that I am likely to get some pretty decent speeds next year? I'm currently in Mornington, within a cabinet area and currently enjoy 14-16mbit syncs with (when Xnet allow it) 12-13mbit Xfer rates (pun intended). Kinda hoping I'll be getting somewhere close to these, as next year I'll be switching to telecom and subsequently will be paying ~$30/month more (due to needing a phoneline - yuck!).

Cheers, and sorry if these questions sound stupid :)

That means you are within ~2km of the exchange so you won't get a cabinet. You will still get ADSL2+ from the exchange. Try a few different addresses around Dunedin and you will see the cabinet areas.
