I'm moving back to NZ in a few months, my partner and I will both be working from home. Our place is in Wellington and has fibre, Vodafone HFC and hyperfibre as options.

Does anyone have suggestions on providers/connections with the best speed and ping to European servers (on average), is there even much of a difference between them? Most of my partners work will be via a European VPN so getting a good connection there would be key. Another important factor would be reliability, I saw some providers offer a 4G backup which could be good to get through a pinch.

Fibre is what you want. it doesnt matter what speed, you will get the same ping on any of the plans.

Fibre is rock solid for reliability. I've had no faults in the 6 years since moving from ADSL (that couldn't be solved by a power cycle), where I was getting hard faults every 2 years minimum and having to power cycle far more often.

Those 4G backups are really on good for single premises/street outages because the 4G network will be/is overloaded in any wide spread outage, or is itself taken out by the same backbone fault (think flooding, wayward excavators etc).

you are looking at lest 300-400ms to Europe, regardless of RSP and connection technology, this is enough to cause lag on things like SSH/RDP/Citrix

Yeah I think she only has to access files via the VPN so ping is only a concern for video calls, I was mostly wondering if specific ISPs routed traffic poorly to Europe and therefore I should stay clear of them.

Routes are not static and can change so ping / latency changes

I often have video calls to people in Europe using various different apps: Zoom, Google Meet, Skype. Etc.

Ping isnt so much of a concern for those. Sure there's a little bit of lag - no worse than a phone call to them though. Reliable throughput is far more important IMO.

Also, just in case you're not aware... Fibre here means FTTH. Labelled as "full fibre" in the UK.

Thanks for the tip. So basically it seems that any fibre provider should be fine.

I'm in Germany currently, I guess some places have fibre here but the internet situation is pretty bad overall. London was similar when I lived there also. I'm looking forward to finally getting fibre after leaving New Zealand before it rolled out. Crazy that I left when NZ still had data caps and VDSL and now you can get 8gbps unlimited data fibre.

Don't go Vodafone. Terrible customer service and their routing is typically worse than average. On fiber you will have a reliable connection, but the ISP you choose provides backhaul etc. I find 2degrees generally excellent for service, performance, and routing is generally sensible, I've been using them for many years, not sure about EU ping times though. I don't work for them I'm just a happy customer who used to use Vodafone who I wasn't happy with.

I use 2degrees for daily work with Norwegian VOIP, servers in Europe and Norway and lots of Zoom, Skype, Teams etc. meetings. Been very happy with them and have used 2degrees since 2013 (since they were called Snap).
