Hi Everyone

I am currently looking for a new ISP. I live on the North Shore in Auckland and am currently with slingshot.

I would lke to try a new ISP that is reasonably quick but competatively priced, Any Suggestions?

We got a ad from Woosh in the mail the other day: $44.95 per month for 10GB (wireless) and landline which we thought we would go with but after looking on here I can't realy find anything positive about Woosh so now the search is on Cool

Any help would be much apreciated as I'm not really sure who is good or otherwise!

Thanks in advance!

Which plan are you only currently with Slingshot?

Do you want both broadband and phone line with the same company?

How much do you use the phone, ie: lots of calls to mobiles and toll calls or practically no toll/mobile calls from the landline?

We do the odd toll call but not many and would prefer both with the same company I think although I guess we could put phone to telecom and go elsewhere for broadband.

Currently we have 3GB a month with Slingshot and don't go over that so the 10GB Woosh was offering was probably a bit excessive for my household!

Everyone's looking for cheap + fast. When it comes to the NZ market, you can only really have one of those at a time.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

OOOHHHH HYPERFIBRE!

Also which exchange are you on ? If youre near an Orcon enabled exchange (are all the Shore ones yet ?) then you can look at the Orcon+ network - Ive been happy with them.

There are many variables that go into choosing one, but I like http://www.Maxnet.co.nz in Albany which is not far from you so you can even go and visit them to check them out.

They have robust systems, provide personal service.  They have diesel generators so don't go down in power failures, 3 fibres going in and out so they don't lose traffic with a single strike from a backhoe, 24 hour on-site security.

They are reasonably priced though not the cheapest around.  Reliability ranks highly [in my opinion].

Another which has a good reputation [though I haven't had much to do with them] is http://www.orcon.net.nz/ which is part of Kordia which does good things.  Kordia is currently running a 3 month free wifi service [though when I tried it yesterday, there was a glitch so I stalled on takeoff, but their website ran really fast over wifi in Remuera - impressively so compared with how it used to go].

I recommend not Telstra and not Xtra.   There are swarms of others, some of which might be better for your requirements.

I should have added - READ THIS:   http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=29409   Which directs you to a wiki on many internet service providers

<<If you are hunting for a new ISP, and instead of starting a "What's the best ISP" topic, I recommend you take a look at NZ Connections.

It gives a good break down of all the plans offered by the different ISPs, plus some other handy info related to them.  Even better, as a wiki, if you see a mistake or information that is missing, you can add it yourself.  >>
