This is the list of DNS servers from various NZ providers that was previously on NZC (now closed down). I've put it up here because it was discussed.

Note: if you are unsure on what you are doing - always use the DNS servers that your ISP recommends. This will generally result in a better internet experience.

Feel free to suggest things to change on the list :)

Updates:
8/01/2012:

  • Ordered list by company name.
  • Renamed Xtra (Telecom) to Telecom NZ / Xtra
  • Removed old Paradise and Clear.net Servers.
  • Added new Orcon servers.
  • Updated old Orcon server entries
  • Added new Inspire net servers.
  • Updated old Inspire net servers.
  • Readded border :)

7/11/2012
* Added notes for slingshot NS.

Those are old Orcon DNS servers. New ones are:

Primary Name Server/DNS : 121.98.0.1

Secondary Name Server/DNS : 121.98.0.2

You should remove the Paradise and Clear.net servers, leaving TelstraClear with 203.97.78.43 and 203.97.78.44 only. All other ones are not maintained or out of sync.

InSPire Net should be:

Primary DNS Server: 203.114.168.2
Secondary DNS Server: 203.114.128.2

(although the settings you have will work)

Hosting Direct's resolving nameservers are 113.21.227.244 and 113.21.227.20 - access from outside our network is available on request.

ns{1,2,3,4}.hd.net.nz are authoritative nameservers for domains hosted on our shared hosting platform and our DNS management system.

Two updates here are our new authoritative name servers.

ns1.maxnet.net.nz - 123.100.67.222
ns2.maxnet.net.nz - 123.100.87.50

Each is a VIP to clusters of name servers, one set on each side of the country.

How about using something like OpenDNS? It takes care of quite a bit of security threats as well. Not hosted in NZ, but they have servers in Sydney that deal with traffic from NZ.

Why bother?! Imagine how much traffic will be wasted from attacks. So much hassle for so little gain. If you want slow dns might as well Use Google.

Why not just use your ISP supplied DNS which will give you the best possible performance?
