Ok im a student so high speeds are not that big of a deal im happy at 215kb download speed but i ran a test and it says im downloading at 28kps. I live in the kaipara region so im not sure if location is the issue or its my modem or what; my modem is DLINK 302G. Any ideas why i can't get up to my maximum of 256kps that im paying for, our dial up use to get 5kps max so i think it may be location....

lol....you are connected @ 256kbps (your line speed) but your download speed is always divided by 8 to get the max download speed.....

for eg. you are @ 256kbps = 256/8 = 32kbps is the max you can get when downloading anything and you are getting 28kbps which is very reasonable speed for a 256kbps connection....

if you go for 3.5mbps connection then your download speed will be = 3.5*1024 / 8 = 448kbps (14 * faster than your 32kbps download speed)

cant blame slingshot here.....

Your line speed is masured in bits (Kb/s). But most programs will report download speeds in bytes (KB/s). Note the difference in Kb and KB. A lowercase "b" indicate the bit as the unit, while an uppercase "B" indicates bytes..

We all know a byte is equals to 8 bits, right? Maths from here.

As the first reply, but there was no distinction between b and B.

i do understand the difference between bit and bytes however my friend who lives across the road, gets a download speed @ 215kb with Xtra 1GB, and its the same speed so i figure its how far away i am from the exchange or slingshot, he has the same modem too.

You've already said that the plan that you are on has a max speed of 256kbps. The Xtra 1GB plan has a max speed of 2mbps. I would imagine that this is the main reason why your friend gets much faster download speeds than you - he is on a faster plan!
