Glyn: Ok im a student so high speeds are not that big of a deal im happy at 215kb download speed but i ran a test and it says im downloading at 28kps. I live in the kaipara region so im not sure if location is the issue or its my modem or what; my modem is DLINK 302G. Any ideas why i can't get up to my maximum of 256kps that im paying for, our dial up use to get 5kps max so i think it may be location....
Your line speed is masured in bits (Kb/s). But most programs will report download speeds in bytes (KB/s). Note the difference in Kb and KB. A lowercase "b" indicate the bit as the unit, while an uppercase "B" indicates bytes..
We all know a byte is equals to 8 bits, right? Maths from here.
As the first reply, but there was no distinction between b and B.

blahbmc: You've already said that the plan that you are on has a max speed of 256kbps. The Xtra 1GB plan has a max speed of 2mbps. I would imagine that this is the main reason why your friend gets much faster download speeds than you - he is on a faster plan!
