There is a ground station in Southland and I'm pretty sure the cells from the satellites don't reach that far. I would say they are just backhauling traffic to Sydney, where Google is announcing the Starlink NZ /24. Google doesn't have a presence in New Zealand so it makes sense to, for now at least, just backhaul to Sydney and then "talk" to the internet from there.

Do we know where the Starlink DNS server is located?

Here is some Starlink info

Public IP addresses  103.152.126.112;103.152.126.113;102.152.126.115  These are addresses I have seen. customer.syd1.mc.starlinkisp.net

Uses G-NAT so no fixed IP addresses are available.  (Note: Starlink has advised that they are working on iPV6)

I use a Fortigate 30E
Set your third party router WAN port to DHCP.
You will need to set a static route to 192.168.100.0/24  if you want to receive the Stats page in the when using third party router

I received a private address in the following range 100.80.0.1-100.80.63.254  100.80.0.0/18  netmask 255.255.192.0

Default GW 100.127.255.4

Some more ping times from this evening,  Location: Port Hills Christchurch.  Over the last few days have observed I get the best ping times from Sydney  and worst from Christchurch.

I generally get best speeds from Christchurch

One thing to note is that the Starlink Public IP addresses are in Auckland. So Auckland is <50 Miles from Christchurch via Starlink :) and Christchurch is about 450 Miles from Christchurch

Key appears to be in the resolve there

customer.syd1.mc.starlinkisp.net

And those ranges are indeed Starlink AU

Far as the world is concerned. You're in australia. So bouncing to them will be faster. While coming back here to NZ servers has to go undersea across the tasman :)

That said the .113 geo resolves to NZ (but is likely an automatic thing)

Thanks for all the info. I think that confirms that everything goes via the Sydney PoP, from the previous info we had:

103.152.126.0/24 Starlink Sydney PoP 1 user addresses (New Zealand)
2406:2d40::/36 Starlink Sydney PoP 1 user addresses (New Zealand)

I'd prefer a Auckland PoP with good local peering, a lot of the RBI connections I want to replace with Starlink are used for VPNs to NZ fibre endpoints and don't really need the traffic going via Sydney.

Drove down to the Location of the "Hinds" Starlink Ground Station.  The site is actually outside Ashburton next to an ANZCO abattoir.  See photos

No Ground Station there yet.  Plenty of power and a Fibre Connection available

Someone on Reddit visited the Puwera site, and it seems to have dishes installed already!  I almost popped down there a couple of days ago too.  Perhaps Starlink are focusing on the most southern and northern sites in NZ first?

https://www.reddit.com/r/Starlink/comments/mdi0z1/i_found_a_ground_station_for_real_this_time_in_nz/

Tesmanian made an article out it :) https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/star-2

I was checking over my NZ ground station map co-ordinates and tried to manually decode some more accurate positions of ground stations based on the grid references and Linz maps.  The existing co-ordinates are not bad, but these should be more accurate.  I've put them into a Google Map, together with cropped Linz map images, and site photos from here and Reddit.

I placed my order on 23/2/2021 and paid deposit. At that time I received a confirmation of payment and another email about being on a wait list.  I then received an email on 12/3/2021 that my order had been accepted. Full payment was collected on 17/3 and kit shipped on the 18 of March.    Received my dish on 22/3.

At the time you placed your order did pay a $159 deposit?   February 10 seems early as it wasn’t published until around the 20th that orders were open for New Zealand.

I also placed and paid for my preorder on the 10th of February but haven't heard anything further. There are people around me that placed orders later and have received their dishes.

What is happening is that only a subset of cells in current coverage areas are active and it is a slight lottery if your address happens to be in an active cell. I assume this is because each satellite can only serve a finite number of cells so they need more satellites in final orbits before they can activate 100% of the cells.

I've roughly started to map the pattern of active/inactive cells in Canterbury to get an idea of the pattern:

I’d been checking the order status daily and was able to place my pre-order early morning in 9th Feb.

I started this thread later that day.

My order is still pending. I’m in the Mackenzie District. From trying various addresses I can see that full orders are available in Temuka, Pleasant Point and Ashburton, but not in Geraldine, Fairlie, Albury or Cave. Addresses in these areas are open for pre-order with service expected late 2021.

Been monitoring my power usage since installing the Starlink dish.  Consistently using about 110W minimum and seeing peaks of 150W.

Power supply is quite hot to the touch.

Has anyone else looked at power supply temp and power usage in NZ. From reading online seems to be a bit of variance in power usage reported
