JEDENZED: Thanks for all your input guys, much obliged :)

Can anyone advise what kind of a *MINIMUM* ADSL2 speed I should expect in this day and age in NZ? What do you experienced users consider as a base minimum below which you would complain or consider switching providers?

I guess the answer is "it depends".  There are so many variables to consider.  The best measure is against what you are getting now perhaps?  Depends on your usage and expectations.

Perhaps this recent thread may help http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=112855

We had the same decision to make but elected to stay with Telecom.  Couldn't get Orcon to answer simple questions about their own product, never returned calls, got mixed answers when asking about parts of their contract (they didn't have a clue about some really basic stuff) and then saw a heap of complaints on line about dropped phone calls, hardware faults with long wait times for fixes, and a help desk that was next to useless..and that's if they would actually answer the phone.

They also restrict customers on the all you can eat plans giving preference to fixed rate plan customers.  Reviews varied on how much.

AYCE plans historically have = trouble.

Decided an extra 20 bucks a month was worth it for piece of mind.

Just IMO

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Like stated before, you can not get a minimum figure to expect. Mainly because of variables that could include, age of the cables, distance from cabinet, age of house/wiring inside house. The list carries on.

I honestly do think your best option would be Telecom. Unless of course you go with either Snap or something. Kiwilink I know dont use contracts. So you can disconnect any time. I currently use Kiwilink as my provider for VDSL2 and I've not had a issue with them at all, aside from them not having their call center open the weekend or after 5PM. They do have a person working outside of working hours, helping people with issues, but the only way to get ahold of him/her is via email.
