As part of our Terms And Conditions, Unlimited Internet has a fair use policy designed to stop a small proportion of users unfairly burdening the network for most other users through what we would consider 'extreme' usage. In these rare cases, we will temporarily slow the connections of the extreme users to ensure overall network stability.

Fair use policys protect the ISP when people do hammer them..

At their pricepoint, i could see this being even more important.

It also protects the other customers of the ISP.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

Hi everyone,
Just to introduce myself my name's Sam Matthews and I work for Unlimited Internet. I wanted to jump on here just to provide as detailed answers as possible to any questions you guys have.
My goal is to be as tranparent and honest as possible so please feel free to throw any pointed questions / queries my way.

To address all the questions that have been posted so far:

Ownership: Unlimited Internet is the retail arm of NGW, a joint wholesale venture between Fastcom and HD Net Ltd.
Yes the CEO of the company is Ben Simpson, and yes he has a patchy history on online forums to say the least. He went through a bit of a 'golden patch' around 2011 where it's fair to say he was pretty
immature and basically seemed to lose all persepctive of how to talk to people online.
I can though verify as someone who's worked for him for a couple of years that he is actually a good boss, has mellowed out a lot, and is quite passionate about dropping internet prices in NZ across the board.
When he launched NGW it had a hugely disruptive effect on wholesalers with many wholesalers having to drop their prices to keep their clients, and this has had a positive effect of basically
contributing to lower broadband prices for a lot of smaller ISPs.
So anyway there's my 2 cents about the 'Ben on forums circa 2011' elephant in the room.

As far as the service / prices etc go:
Basically I can confirm that we are operating at a decent margin and it is sustainable, primarily because the wholesale cost isn't actually too bad for us as we utilise our own wholesale 20 POP network.

Rate limiting / Fair use:
As some commentators have already pointed out, this clause exists primarily to protect other users on the network. If the network starts getting slammed by a few extremely heavy users it's no good for anyone.
Basically what it boils down to is if you're not operating a server farm or trying to run your own VISP though one of our connections you should be fine.
We will prioritise VOIP and gaming traffic above p2p to make sure those 'time-critical' services are as good as possible.
Right now we have a good core and tons of capacity on our network anyway, so most of these limiting functions won't even need to kick in until we have a much more substantial user base.

The terms and conditions wording regarding foreign laws:
Not sure what the issue is here? It's all just standard boilerplate.

welcome on board.

1) your website doesn't seem to be working properly. It's telling me I can get UFB when I know for sure I cannot. I've tried a few other addresses randomly that I know cannot get UFB and it is telling me I can get it.

2) What do you mean by the above bolded part? The majority of costs for broadband come from the Chorus input cost - ~$45 for naked broadband. So whilst having lots of pops is great for cheaper backhaul, it doesn't avoid the lions share of the costs, i.e. the Chorus costs.

Hi,
Yeah the checker is meant as a guide and isn't 100% accurate at the moment unfortunately, that's why we advise users to request a manual prequal. Our data feed from UFF is not 100% complete at the moment and we have a few bugs with that dataset. We're working on it constantly though to try and iron them out so the accuracy is constantly improving.

As far as the costs, yes we all do pay chorus but that still leaves room for margin. I can confirm there is basically a flat margin across all of our plans which is healthy and sustainable.

IS your UFB packages available in all areas - or just chorus ufb areas and not ultrafast areas (hamilton tauranga etc)

We can provide UFB coverage in these areas additional to the Chorus network, kind of on an address by address basis. We're happy to do any manual prequals for people to get exact services etc...

The address checker either, Doesnt know an address exists or shows there isnt ADSL available when a house already has ADSL

Hi Yaba,
Yeah our checker is meant as a guide and it's currently giving us a a few unexpected results. It's a third party integration and the data feed has been far buggier than we expected it to, but our developers are constantly fixing it and it's getting more and more accurate.
We're happy to do manual prequals through wireline for anyone who's interested.

Hey,
The phone line we offer is VOIP, and we can run it over a naked or non-naked connection. I've just clarified the language a bit on the 'broadband plans' page to make it clearer what the difference between the Naked and non-naked plans are because I think it was a bit ambiguous...

Basically any combo's possible if you really want a VOIP phone (for the cheap overseas calling or whatever) you can run it over your non-naked connection and POTS line, but if you don't have / want a POTS line then you can get VOIP on top of the naked service.

Make sense? Basically we just wanted to leave every possible option open to people rather than making them choose Naked or anything like that.

So if I want a POTS line I would go with non-naked but I can get a VoIP line on top of that?
